I have one truck and thinking about adding more, but need to watch costs. OOIDA has a spreadsheet to calculate cost per mile. Do you like it or have a better way?

kwb Would you post wherethat is? I can't find it. Thanks.
GITRDUN45 Thanks this. -
OOIDA website, on left click on Business Tools, then Truckers Tools, then Cost Per Mile spreadsheet. It is out of date and a lot of the cells do not have formulas that should have them, but it is a starting point.GITRDUN45 Thanks this.

It is a helpful tool but how can you get an idea BEFORE you sign on dotted line? How you get estimates on all those insurances etc........ Good tool after the fact you committed yourself to a huge loan. Guess it helps some. But I'd sure love to use it before hand to compare to my figures already done.

I don't think I asked the question very well. What is your cost per mile? Wanting to know from people more experienced at this than me.

$1.35/mile + driver.

Dangggg and I thought my figure of 1.10 was bad. Have a long nose w/cat pulling mountains up mountains?

We ran two types of keeping track of cost. That's Dollars Per Hour and Cents Per Mile. The Dollar Per Hour includes all the cost it takes to put a driver behind the wheel (or yourself). It's the drivers pay, insurance, benefits, truck insurance, truck license, permits, taxes, computers and electronic gear, chains, and all the other cost that does not involve moving the truck down the road. Cents Per Mile includes all the cost it takes to move the truck. Fuel, engine fluids, maintenance including up-keep of the truck, tires, breakdowns, and all cost associated with keeping the truck rolling.
You can estimate your first truck and get a good idea then with excellent record keeping your cost can be figured to where you'll know any given time what's it costing you. Of course no two trucks are going to be the same and items will pop up out of the normal but I believe it's a good way to know where your money is being spent. And you can always adapt your system to fit you better. It helped us to know where our cut-off miles were to hire an outside company to take our loads. It was a 160 miles. After that the outside company began being cheaper to use than the company driver. But there are many things you can identify to help you with your savings. You just have to sit down and come up with all the cost and keep them separated. Your Dollars Per Hour will be more exact than the other Cents Per Mile. So now you can bank a sum that will keep your truck going. I would add 10%. Your Cents Per Mile will identify where your cost are being too high so you can adjust. That side will show a greater influx because there's so many variables. Like cost of fuel and where you buy it. Look around there might even be a computer program that's close. So good luck and keep all your records! -
I would hire a Husband Wife team and run them. Much better than a single guy. Got in too much trouble with ours. Show up 2 days late, tore up equipment, disapperar for 2 days, would'nt call in. Sol his ride out from under his butt. We did our own spread sheet and then turned it to the bookie who said ya-nay on investment, taxes, Worked well as we got better write off w/o IRS doing audit. He made us more than we paid him by showing us how to deduct clothing and little thing and then keeping every rect in a monthly envelope. We figured 1.00 and 35 CPM for truck and driver in 2007. It ahs gone up since then because you ahve to figure in replacement of truck at 450000 mi so it still has warranty. If you don't Uncle Sam takes it anyway.

Cost per mile for a mega Otr Co truck is around 1.6 $.They have all kind of advantages and discounts but also newbies who tear up equipment ,not sure a single owner operator could do much better. I just calculate mine as a buck a mile excluding my pay. Easier to count. Don't own a trailer .
