If you have adequate following distance then there is no reason why you need to decelerate fast enough that the vehicle(s) behind you have no choice but to slam into you. Adequate following distance will allow you to GENTLY apply brakes, turn on the 4-way flashers, and alert the drivers behind you that they also need to begin slowing down. There should never be a reason to be braking hard in a situation like this.
It's the folks that have severe cases of ARS that have problems.... (Anal Remora Syndrome) -
If you actually understand something about statistics then you know the probability of an accident does not depend only on ones own behavior.
And if I did not understand that crucial and partial contribution of my own behavior then it would be very improbable indeed that I could drive for 31 years without ever causing an accident.
I still don't see an argument here. But if you must insist on having one ...do keep trying -
I guess you have never had someone change lanes into the adequate stopping area and suddenly hit the brakes.
I wonder how to get into the perfect driving areas you have and that Meltom believe exist.
I know the real world.otherhalftw Thanks this. -
ARS ! never heard that. Thanks

Understandably things like this will happen. All you can do is anticipate and react, so when you see the driver making that move in front of you too quickly, you should be prepared to increase your following distance. If this happens in poor conditions you should start, slowly, increasing your distance as soon as they make that move.

I think I will just continue to practice the driving I have used for many long years. It has been accident free.
I learned many long years ago, for the emergency driving class, the term that stays with me all of the time.
RATE OF CLOSURE.Meltom and dogtrucker Thank this. -
