I would love to know true numbers, who was safer (real 2 vehicle accidents ) - 1950 to 1980 1980 to 2014
I have seen posters write that the numbers show it getting safer now --but then again i just read that its been going backwards for the last 3 years.

Well hell you were just getting started at 818 miles weren't you? I'm surprised we went 21 pages and this thread hasn't been shut down yet. I cheat I have to I'll admit it. I'm sure I'll be judged for it but it is what it is. I'm the horrible truck driver that drives for hours and hours and is a hazard to everybody and their mother. Yet my truck isn't the truck sitting in the ditch up there on I90 in SD, or strung out across I80 in nebraska.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. E logs are not the answer. The driver is only as honest as the twit behind the computer that's editing those logs. And how many e log drivers do you see in the ditch as opposed to drivers on paper? I'm not sitting there running 63 foot on the floor in snow and ice because I'm worried about getting to the truckstop before my truck shuts down or I the computer starts ######## at me. Could it be...maybe just maybe...that that Elog is making it more dangerous out here on the roads? And the drivers that are cheating their paper logs aren't the problem?

No questions asked it was safer back then.

Theres just no way to know, If you took the percentages --i am guessing the 1950 -1980 drivers were maybe better drivers, and "no" i am not saying there arent good drivers that maybe just started last week.
But in my theory you had drivers that actually wanted to drive a truck and were a little more mechanically minded and could chew gum and shift.
As opposed to maybe quite a few that were forced into this decision based on economics and maybe can only hold their job because they are in an automatic. I dunno.

Well take into account the safety features we have today as opposed to what you had back then as ell? Back then you had to b a driver. Now days the truck shifts for you, the log book thinks for you, heck you don't even have to have a pen or quarters for directions the GPS will tell you where to go.

If you couple that into effect I still believe it was safer back then. Ive actually had drivers ask me how to fill out a paper log book. That's rather sad if you ask me and they're going to be screwed if the qualcrap takes a dump on them because they won't have a record of their duty status. I'm not saying what I do is right, but I know when to shut down and when I can keep going. And I don't have to worry about my truck shutting down in the middle of traffic, or running against the governor in a snow storm because I've got 10 miles and 13 minutes before I'm out of hours.

Nevermind the fact that 4 wheelers gave some respect back then around big trucks because they understood a truck is a very heavy vehicle and what will happen if they are between it and a hard place. Look at how people drive today. Add the billboards for lawyers to call after an accident with a truck for your road to retirement, and there you have it ....

That is very true. See it on t.v. every day. Call Joe blow if you've been in an accident with a truck. Well put him on the street and make sure when everything is over that you're living in the playboy mansion.
