Forklift cert. question

    Howdy,
    How does proof of forklift certification work? I was certified in North Dakota a few months ago. But I have no card or any proof of this. Should I have been given a card or am I just kept on file somewhere? I assume it is all the same OSHA exam regardless of state?

    Doesn't really matter.
    Most companies would make you do their own Cert. anyway.

    Guessing you're asking b/c you're wanting to Load/Unload your own truck at the Shipper or Receiver?

    They should have given u a card. At least thats how it is in M.D.

    These receivers crack me up. We are "certified" to drive 80,000lb machines all over the country but they want us to have a forklift cert to move freight off the truck. I'll never understand that. Driving a forklift isn't rocket science.

    I've shown them my forklift certification before. I still get a pallet jack. :(

    It doesn't matter, each company has to certify you on their exact make and models of forklifts per OSHA, so even if you went thru a class yesterday if you are at a different company you need to be certified thru them. It is bs, as said above we can operate a tractor trailer but not a forklift, but the government never been all that bright! To answer you direct question though, you should have been given a certificate when you completed the class although it is not required to have it, the company may just keep it in your employee file as it is only good for that company.

    Ok thanks guys. At least I know I can ace the re-test if I do end up getting certified again. I am actually pretty decent on one. I start with a flatbed company soon and wasn't sure if any shippers or consignees would want me using their lift anyway, because of any liability issues.

    I'm certified up to a 17 ton Manitowoc but I see what you are saying.

    The problem is when OHSA put those regs in effect, they contained languauge about the training being site specific. Like one dock isn't like every other. Sheesh!

    Central Transport doesn't even train on their docks. Imagine 50 truck drivers wide open kicking up a dust storm. It was fun in a way.
