I like it a lot more when my wife rides along. My mood goes south after about 10 days out here alone.

I guess... but it's not a wise one. Once operating a vehicle becomes ~second-nature the mind naturally wanders, because it's not focused on "driving".... so the natural state of the motorist -IS- "distracted".

Consider: There is nothing in evolutionary history that has wired the human brain for travel at a speed exceeding 3 mph. Millions of years looking for sticks and sharp rocks to avoid causes the attention of the unfocused mind to tend to naturally fall to looking right over the front edge of the hood. That's the "natural" reason motorists and steering wheel holders weave to-and-fro in their lanes and couldn't drive a straight line for 1320 feet if their lives depended on it, because they've never practiced it, and if you suggested it was a driving skill they'd fall over laughing, assuming that's what they naturally do. To many if not most if not a majority of people's driving skills consist of at most, 3. 1) not crashing, and 2) not being ticketed for their "willful misconduct", as the FHWA puts it..

No harm/no foul... and the crash is always the fault of the other guy, and the ticket is either the fault of the cop or the law. (3) is achieving the shortest possible travel time, measured in seconds if not fractions thereof.)

If you have a one track mind then it's best you don't distract it, but not everyone is built that way.

Listen to audio books not good but talking on a headset is:
What about listening to Satalite radio like roaddog trucking or CNN or other talkshows?
What about listening to and talking to another person in the truck?

I no longer like much about this job anymore besides the fact I like pulling doubles/triples.

The solitude of driving is gone. from the barrage of electronics, vorad, cameras, GPS.

The million and one ways you can be screwed.

    The money grab with DOT/LEO's

The label/responsibility of a "professional driver" but with unskilled labor wages.

    14 hr work days.

Three weeks and I'm pretty sure I will be done driving for a long time.

I will admit I am spoiled. I get home every weekend, work for a small company where the dispatcher is my friend and consults with me about backhaul decisions. For me audio books do not distract from focused driving. I would be glad to have you observe me while listening and see if I drive anything other than a straight line. Audio books are my salvation from what could otherwise become overwhelming boredom during those long days.
