I have been driving for just short of 8 months now and recently made a run with a different teammate than usual (a "Driver Manager" also in his 1st year) and discovered he was logging his hours nearly completely against what I have learned. In speaking with him, he made the following claims:
~ If you log 2 or more hours in the sleeper after your 14 hour clock has started, that time does not count against the 14 hours. Said this could also be done multiple times until your 11 hour drive time has expired.
~ That by logging only 10 hours on line 3 & 4 every day, you can run indefinitely and never need a restart. Also heard this from my original trainer.
~ In addition, he wanted to run 5 on/5 off. Citing company paperwork, he said that if you drive for 5 and sleep for 5, the first 5 does not count against the 14 hour rule. I declined his offer, btw.
Yet from my understanding of the FMCSR, once you have begun your 14-hour period the only possible extensions that are granted are up to an additional two-hours drive time (for a total of 13) in the event of adverse driving conditions (i.e. inclement weather or sitting on the interstate waiting for an accident to get cleared) -- providing the total hours still do not exceed 14. I also believe that if you run 70 hours in 7 days, you are in violation on the 8th and must wait until the 9th day when the hours from day 1 are available -- or grab a 34-hour restart if you can. Oh, and the 5 & 5 is a thing of the past, right?
As I have just been asked to become a trainer for my company beginning with my next run (just came off a 9 day/7700-miler and am taking the weekend off), I'd like to teach the new folks correctly. Any experts out there who can help me?

He/she is incorrect and you "if I read your understanding correctly" are mis understanding somewhat also. Lets start with the 11 & 14 hour rule basic rule
11 & 14 hour rule:
Once you enter lines 3 or 4 "after a 10 hour CONSECUTIVE BREAK" count over 14 hours. See my example of a log image. So my 14 hour ended # 2:00 pm. I can NOT DRIVE passed that 14 hour mark unless I 1) have an 8 hour SLEEPER break & 2) say I am going to use the exception of the rule and SPLIT BREAK.
So if you get 7.75 hours of sleep during your 14 hour period, you still have to stop that truck REGARDLESS of ANY situation and take a 10 hour consecutive break. So NO anything less than 8 hour breaks are counting against your 14 hour clock.
Now you said the only way to drive more than 11 hours is for advherse weather issues etc. No my example shows another legal way without any traffic issue's etc.
The adverse issues is usually going to be more of a traffic jam reason and that only allows you 2 extra hours of driving. It does not allow you to go passed the 14th hour (I believe you have that down pat

The 70 hour rule, well if you work 10 hours a day you are right on the 8th day you do not have any hours to work! so you must sit all day and wait until midnight. I hope the below chart explains it ok?

Day 4 (3/10) 10
Day 5 (3/11) 10

There is several threads already discussing split breaking check out the sticky threads in this forum "trucking Industry Regulations" the first discussion thread. Plus we discussed it not long ago and I posted several examples.
But see if this also helps clear things up between you two! Tell him I have been doing logs for 20 years so I am not lieing or incorrect.
I may misunderstand your debate with your partner however, let me know if this all doesn't answer your ?'s/debates
These are 2 different examples it is not day 1 & day 2.
One is with the 8 hour break first and the other is with a 2 hour break "or longer" and you will see if I stop for 2 hours or more I STILL have to shut down at the end of my 14 hour mark! I have 2 options at the end of my 14 hour and that is 1) 10 hour consecutive break or 2) take an 8 and start split breaking.
I also included one that showed an 11 hour violation when split breaking. Becasue the driving time prior to an after the 8 or 2 hour break can not total more than 11 hours.
There was no 2 hour break to go with the 8 hour
