Some LTL companies don't advertise CDL training but they will hire you on as a switcher and let you practice backing that way. Then when you feel ready they let you borrow their equipment to go do your test. I know AAA Cooper and Saia do this.

In my yard we had a guy part time on dock, he will work the dock about 3 hours and then get on the yard dog for a couple of hours every day until he got his CDL. I now feel like an idiot for blowing $3k on a "trucking school".

Thanks for the info. I've thought about learning the switcher job at sysco since u don't need Cdl to do it.. But when I asked about it I would make about half of what I am now. I know I've seen some of the LTL company's advertise the dockworker position pt with helping to get Cdl. But can't really afford to work part time :( one of the guys I work with is doing roadmaster on the wkends 7-6 but I'd rather not spend 6k plus that place is HORRIBLE

Good Luck. That's hard work. That's only Florida location Ive known of. They go all way down the keys from that location back when I use to chat with them early am when getting coffee at 7Eleven heading out of town. Just a lot of stops . Other than that haven't heard anything bad. Good Luck.

I worked for the foodservice side of Mclane in orlando. The grocery side is far easier and there are two people on the truck. You will run odd hours until you get picked up on a route by a senior guy. The key is to bust your arse so the senior guys want you with them. They typically work 3-4 days a week with senior guys earning 100k+( no bs). Just starting you will be on the board and subject to working very odd hours and days until you can bid on a route. The insurance is very good, but the 401k is out of this world. Yea, you think I blowing smoke? Try a 401k match averaging 2 to 1 up to 6% of your income for the last 15 years. This is a warren Buffet company and they know how to make money and you will to. The downside is the hours, manual labor, and they do not put up with lazy, law breaking or reckless drivers.

They double up to 6%? Jesus Christ, so if you gross $1300 for the week they will take $78 out of your check and then throw $156 on top??

That correct. The only thing to remember with Mclanes 401k is that it is a 401k/Profit sharing arrangement. That means they do not contribute every week. Once a year in about feb. they announce the match and then put in your account. If you quit before the announcement you dont get it. That being said the smart drivers that are quitting wait till after the match. Openings in the middle of the year are from drivers that cant hack or got fired. It is a different skill set than most driving jobs and requires great backing skills, ability to think and move at the same time, and good planning and reasoning ability. Sorry to say but most OTR drivers last a couple of days. Just my experience.

I appreciate all the input and information everyone has given. I know they have a bid coming up soon hopefully that helps me some. I got a call from HR saying they have received my drug and strength test results and am good to go once I put in my two weeks notice. I am really looking forward to this opportunity and the challenge. I will try to update and post my experience on here the best I can.

During my interview with the transportation manager he kept stressing how he has had so many OTR guys quit within the first day or so. Also mentioned how backing skills need to be on point. During my road test they had just failed a guy who has been driving for 14 years... apparently he couldn't shift nor back up?!

I didn't know about the 401k being a once a year contribution but still sounds good, also the health benefits starting day 1 for drivers is another reason to jump ship and join them.
