i want to become a truck driver but not if it's manual

Yes, I think companies are attempting to retain drivers nowadays by making the job so easy ,people will stop quitting all the time. Example(paperless E logs,GPS,automatics,no touch freight,no east coast,no forced dispatch etc. Thats what its really about.Its kind of like starting out on an electric guitar because you just want to shred and play powercords with delay and distortion.Instead of starting on an acoustic,learning chords and getting your fingers nice and sore.I started on a super 10 POS with an old man yelling at me to "pull the splitter" actually taking the time to do a real post trip and learning how to read a map.The OP may not espire to be a quote "real trucker" and may just look at it as a way to make more grip than at the BK lounge. May not care about BS on a cb or telling wild trucker stories in a TS cafe in Flaggstaff Arizona. Yeah, I personally think he should start learning the right way.If he wants to let technology do most of the work for him none of my business so long as he's safe to drive.Who really cares?KW Cajun and Warren Earp Thank this.

I'm with you, and I'll drive whatever they tell me to drive, and try to do my best; otoh, if they hand me an auto, I'll use it.
I think with the way technology is progressing, manuals are gonna go the way of "bj and the bear", simply because a majority of American drivers just know nothing about manuals; and at some point that pressure alone will force the manufacturers to bow to reality. -

No, they won't, and they shouldn't. There are way too many applications where a manual is more practical, not to mention cheaper to work on and less prone to failure. There are still plenty of drivers out here that prefer the manual transmissions. Most fleets that use them are those that hire undertrained and, in some cases, untrainable "drivers". These fleets don't care about quality drivers, nor do they care that they have killed the rates in this industry. They care about moving huge volumes of freight. Sure, they have huge turnover rates, but it isn't a huge deal to them, since they have enough power units plugging up the roads that, if one fails, there's another monkey to pick up where he left off.
