First I want to start off that I graduated from Goodwill CDL driving school this past November. I only have my Tank endorsement for now. Even though I passed up a lot of good companies I think I made the best choice.
As soon as I graduated from CDL school I had job offers from:
VIA Metropolitan Transit
Sunoco Logistics
Mo-Vac Oilfield services south texas
Werner Enterprises
JC Fodel oilfield services south texas
Swift
and a plenty other OTR companies
And I know for a fact, these companies wouldnt look at me twice without a CDL from a school.
So is the cost of $3500 total worth it? Yes, I believe so.
New people, if yoi have trouble deciding/commiting to a school, let my experience help you.
Lets go over the benefits of a good CDL school

The real trick to this is finding a decent school vs the CDL mills that only teach you to pass the road test and nothing else.
If I were to make a recommendation, I would tell brand new drivers to go through a full course at a community college, or at least a school with a program that lasts longer than 2 or 3 weeks. There are some good ones out there.
I've never heard of the school you went to, so I can't speak to that. But I do know that drivers that take the time to do a full 3 or 6 month CDL course at a college will be much better prepared than anyone who got all of their training in less than a month.
The real trick to it is to do your homework. Even though your list of job offers is impressive, if you take one of those offers and then knock down a telephone pole during your first week solo, then all those offers will mean nothing, and neither will your career.
I went through a CDL mill myself, and then through a company school as well before coming here. I will say that neither even came close to preparing me for what it was really like to drive a full size and fully loaded tractor trailer on public roads. Not even close.
I wish you the best of luck though. Be careful, take your time, and don't be afraid to stop and back up if you have to in order to avoid hitting something. Your career literally depends on it.pattyj and bigwallmike Thank this. -
Well while we are going over this, You will need to be able to go to an Accredited School, This type of school is accepted by many companies, They will certainly get you the training you will need. I wish all of you beginners luck! Thanks.

For any one considering getting a cdl in north central Fla. Bradford-Union vo tech in Starke offers a 8 week cdl for around 2200 i think it was. personally i didn't worry on price too much because i am paying via MGIB. I had applied for coverage from MGIB to both Roadmaster, and Sage. both of which came back as course not approved. Bradord-Union was approved

I went through a 6 week, 244 hour program at Hamrick in Medina Ohio, and I'm waiting to take my CDL test. I thought the program was great and taught by great teachers all with a lifetime of good experience!!! I have not accepted a position yet, but I have had lots of calls! The most important thing anyone can teach you is to watch you speed! The rest is what I signed up to be a driver for.. hard work!
Chinatown Thanks this. -
With a 244 hour course you can start your career making good money if you have all the endorsements & TWIC. Should be able to start your career making $800.00 - $1000.00 weekly if you choose wisely and stay away from the mega "usual suspects."

The school i have put an application in offers a 304 hour course,Monday to Friday,7:30 to 4:00, 152 hours of classroom training with certificate, and 152 hours of vehicle training with certificate, total 304 hours over 8 weeks time, also includes approved D.O.T. drug screen an physical, also i asked someone else this because was told it was important, and the person who said that never got back to me, the other person i asked did"t know.
The school is A.C.C.S.C. and P.T.D.I. witch is ?, and means to me ?. They are also licensed by the state, approved by National Safety Council for Defensive Safety Driving Course, and member of several other associations. -
I am going to Route 66 here in Springfield, MO. Good school good trainers. I would say it is worth it to pay for a school. Lots of companies out there who want to school you. Watch out for the ones who want to pay for school at their training facility then when you sign up you have signed a 1 or 2 year contract to work exclusively at the company who owns the school.

You know I had this very discussion this morning with a driver at breakfast. What we concluded is that all of these schools are great for those students and offer the hiring advantage normally but you can't teach people who are either unable to be taught or expect this to be really easy and flunk out. Real world experience trumps schools, many who are taught under some system sometimes misses out on that when they don't get that the CDL is a license to learn.
