I have accepted employment with a small company that pays 25% AFTER the cost of fuel. I said the only way this could possibly work out fairly (as if this were fair) was that he start with a FULL tank, deliver the vehicles, THEN fill back up. No he says, you just save your fuel receipts and then deduct them from your pay - each week or trip - I am not sure yet, although I think he said he paid after each trip. Am I right here, or is he? I understand that as someone who needs a job, I have no choice for now. I do have an interview possibly lined up that goes from GA to CA and back, and will probably pay about 2-3X what this job pays, but with the job I have now, I will stay in the Southeast, mainly in the same state I think, and will be home most nights. I am torn, really I am. It's not like I can ask for a day off to go interview for another job. The other guy says he will start hiring around the 2nd of January, so I don't know. I want to make more money, but I am married with young children and want to watch them grow up.

That aside, the MAIN QUESTION IS THIS: I want to hear from other CAR HAULERS if they have ever worked under these conditions? He proclaims that every company does this, but I have NEVER worked for or interviewed for another company that does this. Some may start at 20% with a contract and then move you to 25% after 3 months, with the majority paying 25% (or more for drivers with 7+ years experience maybe). They pay this as the percentage of the load total. He wants to pay after fuel. I have NEVER EVER worked for another company that did this. Yes I am happy to have a job, but I KNOW I am being taken advantage of. This guy actually said he doesn't believe that the 11/14/70 rule applies to him because he is not an OTR operation. Gee I thought the only exception was the 100 mile air-radius rule. Sure it should not affect me that much, but this statement makes me feel as though he may not run legal. Also, what about this new forced 30 minute meal law: does it only matter if you are driving 11 hours or being on duty 14 hours, or does it apply to everyone?

Please, any car haulers that read this, post your opinion: 25% of what the truck makes, OR 25% AFTER fuel? Is this practice common, or have I just NEVER run across it before? Thanks for the input. Glad to have any job now, but this is why I am picky, but I do have a family to feed, so I will stick with it for now. I wish it was the other way around. I wish I could have built up a nice nest egg going out west, then returning to the SE after I got the money I needed.

Feel free to respond to any or all of this, but is it not 25% of what the truck makes? Does fuel have ANYTHING to do with it?

Any percentage job I had was off what the load paid. Gross!! He's beating you after fuel because it's a major expense. Depending on what the load pays you are lucky to get 32-42 cpm off of gross. Minus fuel it has to be minus a third to half of that. So you are looking at 21-30 cpm unless he has high paying loads better than $3 a mile like in the meat industry.

I don't run a parking lot but your being chigaleyed.....sorry. It's not your truck, you don't get the profits so fuel has nothing to do with you. A driver should never be involved with fuel except to add it and get #####ed at when the mpg is to low. Fuel costs are running 38% before FSC and the guy is a jerk for stealing from you. IMO 10 bucks says he still takes your % of fuel off his taxes too.

Do what you have to and bail soon as you can.

    Good luck

I'm no car hauler, but I have worked on a percentage before driving some one else truck and it was off the gross. Since starting our own deal we pay a driver off the gross of the truck. If I hire an outside truck for a few days to catch up, and he is short on cash so we buy his fuel what we do is pay him off the gross of the load as usual. Then show the fuel deduction. The last scenario keep in mind he owns the truck and trailer we are just taking like 8 percent to get him loaded.

There has to be a better job out there. This guy is taking advantage of you. Probably pays on a 1099 and no benefits. Tell him that if you pay for the fuel, you want to claim that expence on your taxes. Then ask him to write a letter on his letterhead stating that you can claim the fuel. Also request that he have the letter notarized. My bet is he will withdraw his job offer. You would make more money working at a fast food place. If he is that crooked the fuel is only the beginning.

Funny how no body asked the op about the log book. Do you really have 2 years and not no better. Stay away from this guy. He won't be in business long thinking the rules don't apply to him. He also seems like the type to jack you around on future references.

Sounds like a good way to get you to pay for thousands of dollars of his fuel, then skip out on your pay too. You would be out big dollars that way. I would want to talk with ex-drivers of his before I did this. No job would be better than what this is if he skips out on you.

I don't haul car's either but any O/O I know of that has put a driver in his truck to drive it for him has always paid the driver 40-50% of the total gross revenue for the week after fuel. 25% seems like you would be working for nothing and on top of it being away from home. I'd keep looking and wouldn't waste my time with that guy.

I had to read that twice about 40 to 50 percent gross after fuel. We pay from 20 to 25 percent of total gross of the truck. I'm thinking there may be a little confusion about what the OP may be getting paid. Reason I think that is fuel is right at half of your expense, so 40 percent after fuel equals 20 percent before fuel. If I was OP I would talk to him one more time just to clarify which it is if it is like you posted you will be making half of the industry standard in pay.
