Looking for suggestions for the best route to get from Collierville Tennessee to Lakeland Florida. Since there is no direct interstate, looking for the most painless way and the least amount of lights. I'm good once I get to 75. I have checked the maps and looked at map quest, just cant tell which of the available routes would be the best to use. thanks in advance.
Best route

72 down to 78 in Holly Springs......then 78 all the way to Tupelo then Birmingham........72 is good, 78 is great....divided 4 lane.....till you get to BHM then it kinda blows the last mile or so
Then 65 to Montgomery, then 231 all the way to 10. Then 10 across the panhandle to 75.
You're probably gonna want to park about the time you get to 10, just go east. About 5 miles is a Loves and about 10 miles is a TA.....both are good sized. If you have to fuel at Pilot, there's one on the other side of the interstate from the TA, just no room to park (maybe 25 trucks).blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
Agreed, about the best I would do too!!! Safe trip!!

Dipschitt, just about 10 miles before BMH, do you mean take 78 all the way or take OLD 78 (at exit 85) those last 10-12 miles?
I see some indications via Google maps that newer 78 is posted "No trucks and local traffic only", due to the construction completion.
Not sure how "updated" this info is. You may know first hand and better. -
Gotta follow the truck route, last time I went through it was about 10 miles before BMH (85) then bear right by Pilot to 20/59 or stay left to 65. If you decide to bear right take 20 east to 65 south.

Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it. Looks like that is the most realistic option. Just another question. I will actually be leaving from Clarksville Tennessee that morning then going through Collierville coming to lakeland. Any places along 78 to stop for the night if I cant make it to Birmingham? My plan would be to make it to the loves in Clanton. A question for you KW. Where on google maps do you find that type of info?

Start with the Map layout, then I also go to Satellite View, where you can also zoom in pretty close.
As a final step many times, I go Street View.
As an example, here is a screenshot of Exit 85, showing a sign "Local Traffic Only - No Trucks" on the continuation part of newer Hwy 78.
You always need to verify things seen in Street View, as sometimes the camera's view can be fairly recent,
or it may be from, say,, a year ago and subject to have been changed.

According to the US-78 entry on Wikipedia, it is not completed to I-65 yet.
