Mystery of the weigh stations?

    Ok,Ive been driving for about 7 years,so not really a new driver. Wanted to talk about the mysterious black art of getting through the chicken coops without being pulled in.Obviously not having any visual defects on your truck is a good start. Just seems like certain drivers always got pulled in and inspected while others never did not at the same company. So I know the CSA score came up the same when they ran the DOT #.One ole boy told me not to look in the scalehouse at them.Just try to look hardboiled ,like your not easy to deal with. When I first started driving I was yanked in all the time,then I started the hard-boiled act then never hassled again.I would even get the Truck Must Exit in Nebraska with Pre-Pass and an empty trailer! Just wanting to BS about the subject and hear some stories.

    If I can legally route around the scales, I do. Even when my flatbed is empty and I'm heading back to the yard, I'll take a back route that has many trucks on it.

    I believe that the coops have the option to route everyone in. If you got routed in with a PrePass, there might not have been something in order from the company end.

    I'd strongly recommend having a clean truck if you're going to be dealing with scales on a regular basis. Dirty truck? Hmmmm...what else is wrong? Let's have a closer look. The before you know it, you've gotten an out of service and you're not going to move until repairs are made.

    But back to my main point. If you can LEGALLY route around them and not have extra miles because of that, why go through them. Others may disagree with me here, but that's their choice.

    My previous job was mostly local driving, but I was asked to run some supply trucks into the mountains and I got waved over several times in November, especially at Dumont. A lot of times it was just a quick walk-around and a med card/license/bill of lading check and I was on my way.

    If you have a green light on prepass , you do not have to go in. In Nebraska once I had green light but truck must exit. Was unsure so I went in as I knew I was legal. Asked inside about it and they told me I could've bypassed.

    Just so you know, if you've got a prepass and you see the "truck must exit sign" if you get a green light on your prepass, just ignore the sign. I was told by a DOT officer in AZ the you always follow what the prepass says.

    Don't be looking inside the coops. Look at, read!, and follow the signs. If the sign says weigh-in-motion and says maintain 10 mph or whatever, do that!, don't slow down to 5mph and windowgawk.

    That rule applies to Louisiana and Georgia as well. Pre pass trumps the sign.

    Because on just about every scale in the country, before you get to the scanner there is there is a great big sign that says "trucks follow IN CAB signals" ... i.e. your pre pass.
