Wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a reasonable heavy truck repair in Edmonton? Just had some work done at a dealership in Edm. and they are
now at $149.50/hr. Their service has been fairly good in the past, but rate keeps going up. This time I feel that they hammered me on the labour-had an exhaust elbow on one side, along with both mufflers replaced. Labour on that alone-22.2 hrs=$3318.50 + shop supplies 265.51. Had some minor leaks by compressor and ps pump addressed, had them check the air ride height (1.1 hrs just for that), check and top up trans and diffs as needed. Total bill: w/o gst: $7098.63! Parts $2288 (can't do much about parts I know) Labour $4453 Good ol Shop Supplies $358. Service mgr said he will "see" if he can trim the labour part down "a bit". It's tough as a small independent operator. You simply don't count, I get that, but it doesn't make it an easier pill to swallow. How's this for stats-if they have say, 25 units being worked on at any given time (it's a huge shop, I am sure this is a realistic number) at $150/hr, they work 8 to midnight, so, we multiply 25x$150x even 14hrs. = $52,500 / day.Lets then multiply this by 350 days per year, allowing for stat holidays and such. If I did this right, over 18 million gross rev/year. Of course I realize there is much overhead, but my point being, do they care if I am unhappy about my bill? Nope. I doubt very much anyway. So, if anyone can suggest some alternate choices for repair, I would be grateful.
Just crunched the numbers for "shop supplies"...4.9% of bill. So, annually on labor alone, $882,000 + ? on parts, maybe another mill? That's a lot of supplies.

I know what that`s like. I had same style go round in Regina. They were double the labor time, twice on the same job, because they did not fix it properly in the first place. I took it up with their service manager. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS BOOK TIME ON A _______, he so elegantly screamed at me, out in their service area. I was going to ask how you can do Insurance quotes and warranty work if you have no book time for any job, but the conversation ended rather abruptly. after he followed that reply with another one concerning industry standards which his response was" we have no standards" .I finally got it straightened out after getting the Manufacturer involved. This truck was out of factory warranty, so I was pleased to see the Manufacturer step in help sort it out.I think asking to close my Company`s account the next day helped too.
Good luck, if you can`t get any thing from the Service manager, chase it on up the ladder. I look at it this way, I`m in business to make money, not friends with people whose only claim to fame is a box of wrenches and an attitude.04 LowMax Thanks this. -

I wish there were decent shops in Bonnyville. I got a shocker when I got a bill for $850 for a simple oil change. He charged me 4 hours labour.
Makes my Pete dealer in Lloyd look like a great deal! -
Wow! Talk about ripoff. I do my own oil changes, takes me not much more than an hour. I suspect they are taking advantage of the booming economy up there?

How can anybody justify 4 hours for a service. Even drinking beer and bs'ing on a Sunday wouldn't take that long
