To the guys who have a small fleet running, say 2-10 trucks, what kind of profits do you expect to see per truck?
Also, what is your business model? Own Authority paying driver per mile, or Own Authority with a 1099 driver deal, and etc??

I was just talking about this on another post on this board. Here is my numbers here... HigB's Blog City - November's Report
Chattduck, RedForeman, chalupa and 1 other person Thank this. -
Well said and well done. Interesting reading too. Would you mind commenting on your corridors and freight type?
And you're right, there's no money in trucks, hence the rush to L/P all drivers.RedForeman Thanks this. -
I have two trucks and trailers and am a carrier with authority. My son drives one and I drive the other. Profit on his truck pays his repair bills and my truck payment LOL. Seriously tho: my business plan has a break-even with about $40k ROI after everyone gets paid. So far I've dumped that back in the business, and then some. Coming up on 3 years in business, it's finally becoming less of a struggle.
We're a c-corp and everyone gets W2 wages. My son gets paid on percentage of gross. He also lumps his own loads here and there and takes that direct on a 1099 (I don't collect it). My wife and I take a modest salary. I pretty much run the show from wherever I happen to be. My wife helps when she can, mainly putting together IFTA reports each quarter and running errands at home when I can't do it. That is, when she isn't working her full time job and running the household, keeping the lights on and making sure they don't cut up my credit card at Denny's LOL.
Most important free advice I can offer: Go conservative with your estimates of what any truck you don't drive yourself will make. No hired driver will perform at the level of someone with their own skin in the game. -
This is great info, and I have a few questions.
First, $27,000/yr isn't going to get anyone very excited, BUT.....
You have a pretty steep trk/tr payment, yet you are only running 2100 mi/wk at a pretty modest rate. Are you working on getting your rates and or miles up?
I don't know how new your equip is, and right now depreciation is probably outrunning equity, but at some point this equip will have a cash value, and u will own it outright.
Looks like you bought new tires. They should last thru next year, or longer, so you shouldn't have much tire exp next year.
I guess what I am saying is that in spite of the above mentioned, you are in the black in year one. And things will get better going forward. A lot of, Most, new businesses can't say that. Congrats
So u gave up on hiring a driver for the second truck and are driving it yourself, lol? There is an old business saying 'You will always be your best employee'. I have found it to be so true. -
Well, I started out with last Nov 2011 with a 2006 International and bought new set of tires all the way around for it and had front end rebuilt, Later I had the overhead done and some seals replaced. I started having low oil pressure and still had oil leaks after paying $3000 to fix the exact leaks that were leaking I just decided to go new. I traded up to a brand new 2014 KW T680 and put down $10,000 there, then had new drums and brakes and tires put on the trailer I pull which is a 2006 Great Dane. So each month up till June I seemed to be in the red, then I was in the red again after buying the KW. It took the rest of the year to get my Net up to the $27,000.
Just to show you what i did on miles here is all of Oct and Nov's lenth of haul and what I got CPM to do it
I'm just going to past it out of my spreadsheet and hope it displays correctly.

These are Dryvan rates to.
Nov 14th and 15th was two partials I grabbed out of TX b/c Tex sucked. I had a third Partial that dropped on me and I got TONU on that or I would of done even better but I still pulled off a decent rate of of TX.
It would be awesome to get reloads closer to where I unload but they want to pay me to cheap. As you see I don't do cheap but when I add in my deadhead to go to my next load it drops my rate to the $1.80 for the year. Still I would rather do what I'm doing vrs doing every load for $1.50 - $1.60 or cheaper. It's tough to get good rates load after load.
I don't think I'm doing bad or making bad decisions it''s just that trucking eats through Money.Last edited: Jan 6, 2014

That explains a lot, and through it all, you are doing well. The decision to go with older vs new equipment is a roll of the dice. I hope the KW gives u a good run of trouble free performance.
I bet u learned a few things in your first year. And, the numbers u posted above don't look too bad. Maybe someone who has been at it a while will chime in with a suggestion or two.
