I start orientation at Con-Way on Monday. First how is it and how do they do the roadtest? Is it the first day or the last day of orientation? thanks

 

Roadtest was at or near the end of orientation. Short drive and a spacious 45* backing test. You had 15 minutes to back in, could pull up as many times as you wanted, and were asked to GOAL at least 3 times

 

You get to do it in between two trailers instead of cones now I believe.

Pay attention while driving around in the van.
That's your road test roads.

 

Hi everyone, I have been on the fence recently deciding on my first company in the industry. I will be making a decision by the weekend and am basically looking at Con-Way TL and May Trucking's Western 11 dry side. I spoke with 3-4 Conway drivers who had all been with the company over 2 years and they all had great things to say about the company. They all agreed it would be an excellent place to start and from what research I have done, I would agree. I have also spoken with 5-6 May drivers and gotten really nice feedback regarding May as well. At this point there really has to be a kicker for me to decide.

I know Conway said I wouldn't be receiving any dental or vision benefits until a year of employment. That is a con for me If I had to find one. On the other hand, I hear so much about May's idle policy and how yes they do allow you to idle but it is a continuous ongoing thing for a large portion of their driver's to have to request idle time in order to not get charged. That in itself could certainly be a big con, or at the least an annoying one. I was told Con-way of course like everyone else has bunk heaters for the colder months, and that their isn't a specific policy or percentage on idle time. Rather the trucks can idle below 40 degree's and above 70 degrees. This seems perfectly acceptable and of course I understand that less idling is always better regardless of the temps.

Overall both companies seem like they would be a fit for me and I am leaning towards Con-Way. I've gotten the impression which could certainly be mistaken of course that Con-Way just seems to be a little more driver friendly when it comes to reimbursements for various expenses and things, idle policy, hometime policy, allowing the truck and trailer to go home with the driver to an approved spot, etc.. The main thing that stuck with me is the drivers all said that Con-way allowed them to run their truck for the most part the way they saw fit and they enjoyed their time while they have been here.

I would appreciate everyone's views and opinions on the subject. With that said, I would really appreciate the majority of replies to come from "current" Con-way TL employee's. There are no perfect companies out there and what's a great fit for some may be horrible for another. What I do try and stay away from on the forum's as well as the truck stops and life in general is negativity. Thanks so much everyone. Stay safe and take care.

 

Current driver, like it here. Would leave only to go owner op or to work for a private carrier. The only things that truly bug me are the fact that getting home on a specific date is a challenge, & some of our drivers leave unswept and/or unrepaired trailers for the next guy. Both happen at any OTR mega carrier...


PS -- we don't have a "former con-way drivers" thread. That should tell you a bit about May.

 

Thanks again. I'm probably going to be making a call back to recruiting and see what we can get set up. It would certainly be easier to head to a May Orientation and then leave out with a trainer here in Phoenix though all things considered.

 

Current driver, it's alright here. They definitely have their moments like any company does. The good outweighs the bad though. In my honest opinion most all of the companies are the same just with a different name on the truck and trailer. You just have to decide who's bull crap you can tolerate more. No matter who you drive for not everything is gonna go as planned. That's trucking and heck life in general.

Im still in school I take my cdl test jan 14th and then I have orientation with conway is orientation a weeding people out event or do they help you through it when I get nervous I make alot of simple mistakes and I'm already nervous just thinking about orientation.
