I was simply asking how to unhook the whole trailer neck and all from the truck. I've been hauling eq. So I definitely know how to break it down. Looking at going to work for a new co. And they use their truck for multiple purposes. Where I am now the truck is dedicated to the lowboy. It's hydraulic by the way.
How do you unhook a lowboy or rgn from the truck (5th wheel)?

Hydraulic is super easy pick it up off the stops and set it on the ground unhook your lines pull your pin end pull out a ways then pick the neck back up and drive away.

I thought he was talking about a lowboy with a flip down goose neck. No, I have not the slightest idea about RGN's. I've never even bothered to look at one. Longbefore I ever started driving I worked for a guy that had a removable goose neck and it had a set of pins to lock the neck in place in the 5th wheel ever needed to be uncoupled but the truck didn't have roller ramp rails on the frame on the back so the foot of the deck had to be blocked to uncouple and be able to get back under it later because the truck was was an old Mack with spring ride and a high tilt 5th wheel. I recall he would have liked to have had a winch put on the back of the truck but the wet kit was mounted there as the truck was used for a lowboy and a dump trailer.
I know very little about lowboy's and don't know jack about RGN's but figured any piece of info is worth sharing. -
Mine is sitting on a couple of blocks right now so I don't have to pick it up when I back under it. I don't have ramps. It simply back under the trailer and the rollers roll up my frame and up onto the fifth wheel. This works pretty well up to the 50,000 to 60,000 lb load range. Since I only have 6 axles it's not a problem. If possible I drive the load toward the rear as far as possible before picking it up to minimize the weight on the nose then after it's on the fifth wheel I move the load to the proper position on the trailer. It requires some practice to get the feel of how to work the clutch and when to say when before the pin slams into the fifth wheel and locks. I always lock the diff lock to spread the load on the axles to avoid breaking one.

Thanks for the info guys.

martin, back when I pulled a rgn , it didn't even have spring brakes, and I had to knock the pins out to dsconnect the neck, I would put blocking under the neck on the truck frame to keep it in the same spot for rehooking, I also blocked up the front of the trailer, this made hooking back the neck with that ancient beast a good bit easier.
this may have been what he was referring to.
but we had ramps made to get the neck riding up to the fith wheel.
I wouldn't know how to act with a hydraulic setup -
The ancer to your question is to unhook from a HDG you set the front of the trailer on the ground and raise the neck just a little bit to get presser of your 5wheel and unhook your lines and pull your handle to release the pin and drive out from under it if the neck is sealed right then it will set there ok. I pull one everday ok and the 5wheel needs to be greased more offed then if you are pullening a van or anyother trailer becuse of all the grit that gets on the plate ok that's the ancer that you where asking for ok
tucker Thanks this. -
I always slid my fifth wheel back first so the neck would go up the ramps and on to the fifth wheel.

I think that he is disconnected by now.

Hydraulic neck:
Dump the air in the suspension, when the suspension has deflated, pick the neck up and swing the compression blocks out (the part that the neck sits on during transit, typically little doors or "dog-teeth"), then lower the neck until it touches the ground. Continue to drop the neck until you see a small gap between the fifth wheel and neck. Unhook airlines, unlatch fifth wheel, pull out from under the neck.
Mechanical:
If the truck has Cozad ramps, just unhook airlines, dump suspension, unlatch, then in low gear drive out from under.
Mechanical, no Cozad ramps:
Block up the trailer, airlines, dump suspension, unlock fifth wheel, pull out from trailer.
