Hey all! I will be leaving active duty army soon and going into the Arizona national guard. My wife and I plan to team drive, after 4.5 years in Korea, we are looking forward to getting reacquainted with the US. From what I have seen, USX is a good place for H/W teams to start, so they are on our short list. Are there any NG/Reservists out there that can tell me if getting time off for drill weekends ever is a problem, or is USX easy to work with. I know by law they have to allow the time, but I would rather not have to scream and yell every month to get the time for the drill weekends.
Thanks for any input!

Hi,
Thanks for your service.
I'm not a us-express driver, though I have a friend with a situation similar (well, exactly the same) as yours that works with us-express.
He says that when he first started with USE, his first driver manager gave him a lot of static about getting back in time for musters- even when he had HR and the fleet manager intervene this clown would give my buddy problems.
My friend has since switched to a new DM (who is a veteran as well) and says he has zero problems with the situation.
It's also worth noting that the new DM gets my friend better runs, protects him from having to pickup lazy drivers slack and in general is a kinder, more organized individual.
I'd say, as most companies go, the US-express has the similar and common issue of being a large company.
(EDIT- it's very ironic that OP should ask this question because I just happened to talk to this particular friend earlier today about this situation.)latitude34az Thanks this. -
Again thanks for your service. As a 9 year veteran of the Army National Guard myself I was lucky enough to not have trouble when it came to drill. There are a couple of things for you to remember. By law they are not only required to give you leave for your drill but are also required by law to give you a reasonable amount of travel time to get there.
TruckDuo and latitude34az Thank this. -
US Xpress is good about getting us home on time. It has never been a problem. Make sure to give enough notice.

Thanks all for the info! I got a follow up question. Do the days you need to take off for drill weekends count against your home time? For example, if we are out for 3 weeks then have to come home for drill will I get 2 days for drill and an additional 3 days home time or would those 2 days for drill count against my home time?

I don't know the answer to that. Give a recruiter a call. They can answer that one even though you don't have your CDL yet.

I don't know about USXpress in particular, but I know a lot of companies make you clear out your truck when you have your AT (Annual Training), as they'd rather not have that truck sitting idly for two weeks. So there's a pretty good chance you can expect a different truck upon completion of your AT time.
TruckDuo Thanks this. -
I never had to clean my truck out for AT. Most of the time they look at it the same as they would if you were on vacation. But that would be a question to ask the company. As for your drill dates counting as your home time that has been my experience that it does count as home time.
