The fact that someone can have 5 DUIs and STILL have any kind of license is insane to me.

    Wow.

    Mind= blown.

I wish the op well in life, but I hope he unsuccessful at being a professional driver. Is this flaming?

Like most, I have a lot of family on the roads each day and I take huge offense that someone can have one dui and still be a professional driver, let alone 5.

I would like to see a suspension of 10 years for the first offense, and a permanent ban for a second offense. And professional driving - forget about it. I don't want my family killed by someone with horrible judgement.

To the OP, hang in there. I think it's insane that after being sober for 11 years an insurance company can give such problems. As a RECOVERING alcoholic I had a Top Secret Clearance and honorably worked in the Intelligence community. Only stipulation they gave me was that if I ever got into trouble for drinking, I would lose my clearance. Didn't lose my clearance until I left everything having to do with Intelligence and no longer needed (or wanted) it. I've been sober 30 years now and I've been lucky that 1.) I've been able to remain sober and 2.) It's never held me back (except for the years I was actively drinking).
There's a plan, You know the deal, if a door closes, a window will open somewhere. I wish you the best. Congratulations on your sobriety, I hope you able to remain sober and continue to recover, it's a lifelong process and worthy of the journey. Also, I learned a long time ago that just because things aren't going my way is no indication that they are going wrong!

I suspect that the majority of flamers on here do not have a clue about the disease of alcoholism and the changes and growth from recovery. God forbid they never have to deal with a disease and get the kind of treatment they give others.

You are not flaming. What you are doing is arguing for punishment for something that COULD happen. Not something that DID happen. I am a conservative and I do not want the Government to have that kind of power.

There was a woman driving a mini van. She was drunk and knew she was drunk. She had 5 kids with her. She called her husband and told him she was drunk but was worried the police would catch her so she tried to drive home. All were of course killed. I want for a person to be able to call the police and ask for help without worrying about going to jail.

Driving tired causes many wrecks by truckers. Should we be kicked out of the industry because of a Hours of Service violation?

People change. People grow up. I am not the same man I was 11 years ago. The Government is made up of WE THE PEOPLE. That includes those of us who have made mistakes. The man has paid the price for his "crimes" and should be able to get on with his search for happiness. Having a CDL will cut his legal alcohol limit by 50% to .04. He will be subject to random test and he will get caught if he does it again.

If a nation cannot forgive its citizens of the indiscretions of their youth, where is the hope for the future.

Forgive me for saying, but this is such a lame cop out for objecting to DUI convictions.

Every traffic law on the books is punishment for something that COULD happen, not something that DID happen. Do you object to tickets for running red lights, speeding, or improper turns? That's just three examples of punishment for things that COULD happen.

If we prevented the government from punishing citizens for what COULD happen, we might as well do away with the driver's license process completely and just tell people, "Just don't kill nobody now, ya hear?!"

The rights of the innocents come before the rights of an alcoholic's second chance in my opinion.

You think his right to a second chance comes before someone elses reasonable expectation of safety on the road.

I realize alcoholism is a disease. But driving (and getting caught 5 times) is not part of the disease. I have no sympathy for this, and consider it more along the lines of attempted murder.

If your family would be wiped out by a guy who was given his sixth chance and failed, what would you think then? Would you change your thinking at that point, or is a seventh chance in order?

Again, for the record, I'm not skewering the op. It sounds like he is doing well. I am saying he has lost his right to be in control of a vehicle in my opinion.
