I am planning to maybe drive a truck in the near future and wondered if there are any good video's for the type of training you will get when you are in orientation for a new company.
Seems like there would be a ton of info for new drivers on the web somewhere but I can't seem to find it.
I would be interested to find and study all info so when I am ready I will already know all this stuff.
I have done all the CDL test on here and passed and will continue to study and take the test over and over from time to time to stay current and ready.
I am interested in knowing everything I need to know so I can concentrate on my driving.
Things like :
Trip planning
How to use and understand Qualcomm
Map reading and GPS for truckers ?
Basic info on a daily operation as a driver.
I have watched a lot of video's on driving, backing, parking and really enjoy them but if anyone has any info I can look at or research just to be a one step ahead of the game I would really appreciate it.
I know I will learn all this in orientation and school but I have a lot of free time and would like to take this time and be proactive.
Thanks

I did a whole lot of research before I went to school, and none of it was worth much. I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just saying don't expect to learn much from them. Everybody learns differently.

Everything you listed will be covered in depth at orientation. Don't worry yourself about it.

Learning from the Internet is like taking a shower with your clothes on. You won't get clean or learn too much. Most of that stuff is what the person making the videos opinions are. Some are good some not so good. Experience is the best teacher in trucking. It's much more of a hands-on learning thing. The best thing for a newbie to do is watch and listen and ask all kinds of questions.

I did my home work about driving trucks before I ever applied to a school! It's good to know but driving and backing is more hands on. You have to be in the truck to get the feel of it. Any way good luck!!

The jj Keller preview videos on YouTube are GREAT!! At orientation they will probably have you watch the full videos. There was one video not trucking related about workplace accidents that was pretty graphic with the injuries. Really made everyone in the room wake up!

It is my belief that Orientation is just about killing time until your drug test gets back. Many times all it is, is sitting in from of a television or computer and watching the same old stuff. The Five Keys and G.O.A.L. You have to learn how to use their electronic logs. That takes like 5 minutes and you will forget it and have to relearn in the truck. As soon as they get your drug test back, they road test you and send you on your way. Two nights at a motel. Nothing to do. Swimming pool but truckers and swimsuits don't really belong together.
The only way to prepare for orientation is to sit in a corner and hum. It is about that exciting.dennisroc and HauntedSchizo19 Thank this. -
For most companies, isn't orientation still, basically, an extended interview? They wanna see how professional you are, and if you can abide by the rules. Am I not right? That is what MY research has proven anyway.
