I was looking into WestWinds school for my CDL's and was wondering if anyone heard of them. I recently retired from the army and would like to get into driving. Would like a school close and one that helps with job placement. All comments welcome.

The purpose of CDL schools is to teach you just enough to pass the test. The real training starts when you get hired on and get out on the road with a trainer and driving in the real world. Go to the cheapest accredited school you can find and be thinking about what type of driving job you want (dry van, reefer, flatbed, etc) and use their job placement service to get on with a good company that trains in the catagory that you want to persue. Ask on this forum for advice on good training companies. Good luck.

Thanks 8thnote for the info. I have been looking at TMC for flatbed hauling. I am a family man and like that they offer more weekends at home. I will have to look into the accreditation of WestWinds. Kindda hard right now to walk away from my current job with the post office but it really looks dead end.

    Office Depot to the rescue!

Get all the endorsements in case TMC doesn't work out. Those endorsements are a good backup plan.

Yeah I plan on getting all I can of the endorsements. I drove a fuel tanker for 16 years in the army but I know civilian driving is a lot different.

    Curtis,

If you have the post 9/11 GI Bill, then definitely check out TMC's OJT program unless you are planning to transfer your education benefits to a dependant. TMC has the best in my opinion. I am retiring as well from the army and really like McElroy from everything I have read and been told. McElroy is based in Cuba, Al so maybe an option for you. TMC has a regional map that shows the liklihood of you gettting home every weekend and if my memory serves me correctly, in the south is was not a guarantee. They are based out of Des Moines i do believe. Just keep reading these blogs and asking questions and i am sure you will find the right place.

Update: Just saw Cuba, Mo....thought I saw Alabama...TMC probably is close enough to you for the 48 of 52 weekends they try to get you home for.
