Hey L-Train,
I know that you wrote this about year and half ago, but I wonder how are you doing??!! Are you still with PGT? - I've just applied with them, talked to my recruiter today (the day before 2013 Thanksgiving) and he said will be calling me around Monday. So, I am reading what I can about them PGT in all these forums in here. Give me some insight, how is their pay, with this idea of 28% of the profit that the owner CEO Pat Gallagher talks about in his video. I did applied with Roehl too, and I really kind like all that I have heard from Roehl. - But as I read your post, I'm kinda happy to have PGT on top of the list now. -
OttMan sorry for being 2 months behind, I am not with PGT right now....some other secret squirrel stuff I am busy with at the moment. I was a driver for a fleet owner and it was a difference in operation instead of being a company driver. But I will say this when I buy my truck I will be back there hauling for them or Mercer to be honest....none of the other bigger companies I am really happy with on their operations, mainly for the O/O side of things.
Again sorry for being behind...I am sure you went with someone by now

PGT has good points as well as bad. I spent the last two years with them, so I am happy to share what I have experienced.
If you like hauling steel let them know up front so that you are not forced into the cheap building material freight such as wallboard and lumber. As a steel hauler you will get numerous coils mainly from u.s. steel mills and you will have opportunities to move a lot of pipe mainly between Texas and Pa. Oh. W.VA.
If you have any desire to run freight to the west coast or pacific northwest you will rarely have that opportunity as a company driver. Your best bet would be to come on board as a lease purchase driver directly out of orientation. I never leased with the company but they do have a solid lease purchase program and will help you out in the event of a major breakdown. Many drivers have completed the lease several times through pgt.
Pgt does have its problems...
If you get into a pissing match with your dispatcher get ready for #### freight...it'll happen.
If you believe Pat Gallagher has an open door policy, guess again...because trust me if you offend him or his staff you will be like me..on to the next company.
All that aside..they are a good company overall..I made many friends there and I learned quite a bit. I was disappointed with the way my tenure ended at pgt but they did say I was eligible for rehire..not sure if I would return though...maybe as an owner operator but not as lease purchase or company...just have to kiss the ring too much for me.
If you want to see more of the country have your hazmat and sign on with the sister company (Southern Pines) they also pull tanker...and pay by the mile...think it still .40 per mile loaded and .30 deadhead. -
