Truck Owners ANGRY and Scared Over Fuel Costs

    First timer here on this forum. Hello everyone. Well I've been an owner operator for 3 plus years was a componey driver for over 16 years. love being an owner operator. i can tell you that I personally I'm about to loose everything I've worked so hard for. Haven't mismanaged money. I've been leased to one of the top o/o companies in the industry. Great company wouldn't want to work for anyone else, they have been very good to me. I live on the east coast frieght is dryed up and just isn't paying enough for me to make anykind of profit. We just had a toll hike here around NYC and with the rising fuel prices it has gotten ridiculus!!!

    As far as shutting down. It will never happen to many bills to pay and not many are willing to sacrifice in order to make it better for us all. I suggest we start by writting our Congressmen and Senators in every state and put a price cap on diesel. Maine is doing just that. We need to put preasure on our government in order to make any changes... Thanks for listning...

    All a price cap will do is dry up supply, and then we really will be shut down. Remember the 70s?

    I drove in the 70's and I never had any problems with fuel shortages or anything. The fuel price went up from .28 to about .60 per gallon is all.

    Then I guess all those images showing long lines and fuel rationing were just a lie???

    I remember seeing them on the news. However, I drove about 200 miles a day in a car that only got about 12 mpg, and this is optimistic. After all, 18 years old with a high performance engine.

    Most of the shortages were in the larger cities to the east. We did not have any rationing or any problems with fuel. My uncles drove trucks and were not having any problems either.

    Roadmedic you are the first one that I've heard say that.


    I don't remember much of the 70s. :D I was born in 74.

    I do remember the rationing of the 80s. I was on a road trip with the family and remember sitting in lines waiting for a few gallons.

    I remember seeing it on the news. At that age, the car was a high performce guzzler. I used large amounts and had to fill it nightly for the driving. Gas mileage was not an issue.

    The only lines I have ever encountered were the lines for the CHEAP stations that would sometimes have a bargain.

    The larger cities seemed to have lots of problems.

    I was there, and there were not any fuel shortages for truckers that i remember---we #####ed about fuel going from as the man stated, going from .28 to in the 6o's. Also several years later going as high as 1.50 per gallon--but then settled to around .80 per gallon.

    I stated in previous posts, and its already coming out here, that a price cap is the way to go---most company drivers have no intention of shutting down--talked to a couple of swift drivers yesterday---they have no intention of stopping. A price cap and a special rate for commodities haulers is the way i see it---but it will take negotiation with congress and getting those jerks to listen is the trick.

    I dont know the rotio of independents to company anymore---but i would think its minimal these days, and its going to get more minimal as time goes along. I hate to be the bearer of sad tiding and as an independent for all my life and still driving my own truck, its a sad state of affairs---

    One more thing, just being a good business man is ########---there are too many accompanying factors which enter the picture to state that you have to be good at what you do and you can survive above the competition. For ever one guy that goes under there are two waiting in the isles waiting to take his place and do it cheaper.

    The man who gets freight hauled for him, (walmart, k mart -etc.) what ever it is , is going to get the the cheapest price, and he isnt going to go out and hire someone and pay some out landish price. There is limit to everything.
