Im dumb as can be and havent figured things out but, commodity, trailer, lanes u run will have a say so in the rates you get.
Think outside the box. I have the same problem you have being in Houston.

Strange how I never see supply/demand come into these discussions of cheap freight. I'll give Laredo as an example. You have far more trucks delivering than loads going back north. Supply of trucks exceeds demand. You can refuse to haul cheap either by deadheading or sitting of course but that begs another question. If you do either you're still spending money that's effecting your bottom line, how does it hurt your business to grab what you can to simply cover your base cost to get into a better market? I know when I do Laredo the truck gets no less than 3.50 going in or it doesn't go because I know my outbound is probably going to be under 1.50. Even if I go out for a buck and each way is the same mileage I average 2.25. That's better than what I need to average by quite a bit.

sometimes that fuel money load is a nightmare that ties up way to much of your time. I dont like deadheading but on ocassions have found it better to d/h to better freight. -
For every single bottom feeder brokerage outfit there are dozens of bottom feeder truckers that pull cheap freight regardless of supply / demand
ShortBusKid, jess-juju, Dryver and 2 others Thank this. -

The Internet was the worst thing to ever happen to Trucking.....

I thought it was CH and TQL -
Before the Internet there weren't nowhere near the brokers that are around today. Back when I started if you wanted to work you had to go out and get customers you didn't go on the Internet and find a load board with fright on it, just makes it too easy for anybody to do it. Only the strong should survive, I was upset about these insurance hikes at first but now that I'm understand that everybody is getting the insurance hike I'm kinda like it because maybe will drive more people out of trucking.
Im not wishing anyone goes under but then again it would level the playing field a lot. It would stop trucker's from hauling freight at all below cost just to stay afloat!!!SheepDog Thanks this. -
wishful thinking my friend, for every guy that goes under, theres a line of guys behind him that think trucking is the quick get rich route to life get some funding and dive in head first. Its a long vicous cycle.
