    Actually their one of the best when it comes to claims, but as of late with them trying to get out of the market they have had some very high rates for some people.

    Most times progressive is the only option for new operations. We started in September 2013. 2 Drivers, ages 25 and 27, both 3 years experience, 1 truck, 2 trailers (dump and tanker), $100,000 cargo, 1 Mil Liability, truck insured for $20,000, trailers at $15,000 each. Came in at $10,490/yr with 2800 down and 10 EZ payments working in a 500 mile radius. We have not had a problem getting loaded by a broker yet, but that is not really our focus. We have only hauled for 6-8 different brokers. We were told by our agent that after the first year in business he can look around and most likely get away from progressive and get our premiums lowered to around $8000 and open up our operating area. We will see.

    It is handled by mercer. You still need unladen or Bobtail (don't remember which they require) and should get physical damage ins, to you can get it through them very cheap. Plus occupational accident is not a bad idea

    That makes sense but wasnt sure how that worked... I think that would greatly reduce start up costs and in the end put more $ in my pocket ather then me run part of my year just to make Progressive happy.... Thank you for the info and the insight through all my posts

    i was told with my quote that there is no price difference to run outside the 500 mile radius and it wasnt required that I stay withing that radius... Maybe that was the benefit of having my CDL for so long..not sure...But still those rates are steep and when observing freight rates and living in Florida.. It really was an eye opener and a business plan changer for me.

    No problem. For what it's worth I would almost guarantee you will net more leased to mercer than under your own. If not more, then already the same. The ONLY way people make more under their own is with direct customers.

    That's outrageous. Usually Progressive is a last resort insurance company for those with no experience. You have tons of experience, so why not get a good insurance company. Call Judy at Benton & Parker in Winter Park tomorrow. She ALWAYS gave me the best quote on A rated insurance companies.

    Ok Ill look into that. I am seriously considering the Mercer route if they will approve me..Might be a better way to start and avoid those start up costs... And once established and having a business with cash flow then re evaluate getting my own authority. But I will research other companies and rate quotes.

    If you go the mercer route you will have to go up to Louisville for orientation and inspection. Make sure your truck and trailer is in top notch shape. They are very very intensive on the inspections. In fact, it would be a good idea to shoot over to the mercer thread and ask about what other contractors have been failed for. They got me for my abs light.

    Im currently reading through the thread right now:)... On page 27.. Ill take any free time I have and pick up where I left off and read the entire thread.. That way Ill have a decent understanding of the company. I have plenty of time to prepare if I do this. The fast track to trucking was to run in Florida until I retire from my regular job but it looks like insurance will price me out of that plan
