I was brought up to know you guys as "Shag Driver"...in Iowa any way.

For the most part, I have always had decent interaction with Shag Drivers---approach them with respect and kindness, and you get the same in return. A Shag Driver can make your day SO much easier....so pissing them off is a foolish thing to do.

Of course any where you go, you're gonna have that "one guy" with an attitude...but that's the same with drivers as well.

I would just ask please; do not zero-radius turn a loaded trailer on pavement....blow out a tire....and then not own up to it, and leave it for the driver to deal with on a "just in time" load. I HATE that. I will crank a trailer from underneath EVERY TIME (due to too close to other trailer)---but don't be blowing tires. Never, ever ONCE got a "Shag Driver" to admit they blew the tire. I freaking know better when it is just a seal on the bead.

Both wrong. We just don't wear pants at all. Ultimate time saver!

I don't believe we've had someone blow a tire doing that at my work before. All the loaded trailers leaving our place are high value so they are to be 'road ready' by the time the driver picks it up. While it doesn't always happen, we try to make it work that way. Usually an issue like a tire or even marker lights, we just inform the company and they decide from there. It's pretty common to see mechanics come out and fix problems on trailers. Now as far as owning up to it, we are actually just contractors to the DC and theirs cameras just about everywhere at this place. So theirs really no chance on getting away with it, if we screw up, we inform our lead who goes up the chain.

And yes, thats how I approach drivers. If you're polite to me, I'm polite right back. For example if someone is trying to drop their trailer in the wrong row, I'll ask nicely for them to move and direct them where it goes. If they are rude to me or get an attitude, I usually will try to avoid confrontation, I've found it works a lot better just to inform the shipping office who will just refuse paperwork to someone until they do what we asked.

With out getting too much into money, I average around 40k a year. This being paid hourly.

Of course, with this I'm working 5 days a week (with 4 months working 6 days) at 8 hour shifts. So I'm home everyday and usually have a weekend.

Some places pay less and some places pay more, just depends.

    pattyj and Skydivedavec Thank this.

I met a guy at a glass house that stated he got paid per trailer he moved. He was a nice guy so I would always either drop it and let him put it in a door. Or put it in a door and let him write it down as if he did. He slid the tandems for every preloaded trailer as we'll AND locked the pins back. How often do they get paid like this?

The equipment they drive are often very old, and held together with baling wire and duct tape. The equipment are often called "old goats".

The yard truck I drove was 33 years old!!!
