    My son is taking a DOT physical tomorrow, which will include a dipstick urinalysis. Will taking coumadin affect the urine readings? Should he disclose to the doctor he is taking coumadin? This job is really important to him and he hates to screw anything up, but he also doesn't want to open up a can of worms if he doesn't have to.

    Depends? Why is he taking a strong blood thinner?

    To answer to question. .. it shouldnt. It is not a narcotic or other abused drug. No reason to check for it. But if they do for some reason they will ask if its perscribed and why hebis taking it. As long as he has a scrip and the reason is not a disqualifying reason he should be fine. I can not think of a major reason. Does he have heart or BP issues?

    I copied this from the D.O.T. website. Hope it helps.;

    "Is the use of coumadin, an anticoagulant, an automatic disqualification for drivers operating CMVs in interstate commerce?"

    Guidance: No. Although the FHWA 1987 ‘‘Conference on Cardiac Disorders and Commercial Drivers’’ recommended that drivers who are taking anticoagulants not be allowed to drive, the agency has not adopted a rule to that effect. The medical examiner and treating specialist may, but are not required to, accept the Conference recommendations. Therefore, the use of coumadin is not an automatic disqualification, but a factor to be considered in determining the driver’s physical qualification status.

    If he is taking coumadin to counter blood clots for DVT's, trucking is not a good choice for employment.
    Sitting in the same position for extended periods of time is a prime cause of DVT's.
    He will have to disclose on his medical form he is taking it and that in itself may disqualify, depending on the company.
    A companies insurance may not want to take on a person with a greater chance for stroke.

    I've been taking Coumadin since 1998 and never failed a DOT physical.
    As long as he brings a letter from his doctor stating that he is being followed with regular INR's and is stable he won't have any trouble.
