I am not an expert on this so just to get the conversation started. I would think that if you have your own authority then it would be a contract issue. I do not know if being leased to two companies without your authority would be possible. I cannot recall seeing multiple DOT numbers on a truck. Also, the advantages of being lease on twice escapes me. You should be allowed to find you own freight when one company is slow. So, in a nut shell, my answer is ....... I don't know.

No, but you can get your own authority and haul anybody's freight.

would it be practical?

Decades ago trip leasing was very common. You would lease to a carrier for a single load. Since deregulation that's basically non existent, but probably still in the law books somewhere.

Trip leasing is still used in certain segments of trucking. But most carriers prefer to have equipment exclusively leased to them. About 20 years ago my dad use to have aluminum signs made up with a different carrier and their respected DOT # on each side. He would just turn the signs to show who he was running for during that load. This was more common before deregulation and shortly after when customers would still only load out trucks from carriers they dealt with before deregulation. A few steel hauling and dump bucket carriers still trip lease, but it is pretty rare.

seems trip lease would be better than a lease with just 1 company...

when trip leasing you turned in logs to whoever you were trip leased to. it actually was kind of a pain back in the day
