Hello, and thank you for having me. I am 58 years old, have been a master electrician for the past 30 years, 25 of that bieng an electrical contractor. My entire life has been revolved around semis. I have always wanted to drive otr, but circumstances prevented it. I now have the opportunity. My kids are thru college, I have been single 15 years, I have no debt and my desire is stronger than ever. I have an excellent driving/criminal record as well as in excellent health. My questions pertain to the better of the companies. I want a variety, and a company that offers the same. Box, drop deck, flat bed. I would like to find a company that sees its drivers with the loyalty and dedication I will bring with me. I live in southeast texas, where swift has a terminal 50 miles away. I have ruled out stevens and jb hunt for various reasons. I will be self paying for school and I would like to begin with a trainer during the winter for experience in winter driving with a mentor, opposed to summer. Any of your valuable advice, input or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I would be surprised if you don't take a massive pay cut doing this, you may want to do some more homework and be sure you can afford this change.

System Transport and Melton Truck Lines are two good flatbed carriers. You're probably in the hiring area for both. They both hire new CDL school graduates.

A good box company is Millis Transfer and they have their own CDL school in Burleson, TX.

4 more good companies that hire new CDL school grads:

    Superior Carriers
    SVTN
    CTL Transportation
    Schneider Bulk(tanker)

I am getting alot of that. Many are suggesting I have a serious discussion with a shrink, but since I was a teen and swamped summers for my uncle who drove for jh rose, ive wanted to drive. We have to work to survive, doing something you love makes it less of a job. I have been blessed in my trade, gained an enormous amount of experience and knowledge which I will have to fall back on if need be. I am just burnt out and ready to begin a new chapter in life. Thank you for your reply

You don't need a shrink! My feeling is, when you get old and sitting in the rocking chair looking at the sunset, try not to have too many regrets to burden you. You can always go back to being an electrician. You can make a good living in trucking, maybe not what you're used to as to pay, but still pretty good. A good tanker or flatbed company can range from $50K - $65K and that's not too shabby in this economy.

I was divorced several years also and would take vacations to the Orient and kick back and enjoy life, much to the dismay of some family and my children. No regrets at all for that either. You've paid your dues that society expects, so now it's time for you to take care of yourself. That's the way I look at it.

Yes sir, melton is on my list, as is maverick. Decided to stay away from refers as it seems to be to much baby sitting. It appears flatbed to be the most appealing. I have made runs with friends pulling flatbed, tankers and box. Got stuck palletizing 40k pounds of skippy peanut butter due to a broken slip sheet machine. I really appreciate your reply. Thank you.

I agree. Where else can you get an office seeing the country through your office window? You folks are the nations heartbeat, without you it stops. I am looking forward with pride, determination and patience to successfully succeed. Your invaluable advice is appreciated.

Hey wanna drive, let me tell you skateboards are good jobs but let's be honest its a lot of hard work, no kidding I mean a lot of work, trowing tarps carring chains it is a young man's game not that us old guys can't do it it just takes us longer. About the only thing I haven't hauled is cars and boats, my fav being cattle, but one knee replacement and now I can't run so not safe loading critters, I flatbed it just takes me longer to crawl up and down, do yourself a favor don't go yanking tankers till you have a few years behind you seen to many greenhorns get into wrecks tankers are a whole different world especially food grade nonbaffeled like I drove, find a reputible company you should make at least a grand a week gross with a good company best wishes, highspot, you can find me around 26855 on the ol cb

I really appreciate the input. Most likely will do a van for a year or so to get confortable with the size. My concern is the backing aspect and some locations I may encounter. Like anything else, experience and pratice are the key. I have a 30' gooseneck that I can put most anywhere, hoping with time the same can be said with a 53' box. Thank you again for taking the time to share with me.
