Man I came from the Banking Sector lol.... Applied for Big Red AKA Halliburton and have been here ever since. I did get my cdl on my own; though before applying with them. IF you get your CDL on your own; then you will have a easier time getting in. Try the Big Service Companies for Cement and Frac... Halliburton, Baker Hughes, and Schlumberger. Schlumberger is through SoS Staffing.

Thx guys. I put in my app already at a few of the big companies like Halliburton, Baker Hughes, Schlumberger and C&J. All I'm gotten back was the automated responses. I finish class the end of this week thankfully. My 401k is bleeding. Been living off it for two months. I'm optimistic and will pursue them much harder after final driving test on Thursday. Gonna most likely drive out to west texas next week and see whats what. Not sure yet. I really don't wanna sell my house and just move. I'd prefer a situation of three to four weeks on and one off. Living either out of the truck or in one of the so called man camps. I'll document my experiences in the job hunt to hopefully help others

Great Post Cooley!
So much to comment on.
Oilfield is for me.
I am currently enrolled in an accredited, PTDI certified Truck Driving School. Will be graduating next week with 210 class hours. I am also on trac to be the valedictorian of my class
Over one year ago, I had begun looking into working in the Oil and Gas Industry.
In 08 I lived in KC. Was 24 years old. Single. Had an extensive background in residential construction. Had a HUD foreclosure house, owned a Meyer blade mounted on a Chevy(pushed snow) and delivered pizza. Had it all paid for with CASH except the house. I also had four small Honda passenger cars. I learned how to do all my mechanic work. I am very apt to learn anything very quickly (used to be a bit sharper) I am a hands on kinda guy, an all around work horse and more!
Housing market fell under.
Decided to hell with this and sold All I had, bought a gold dredge and drove to Central America to become a gold miner. Was there the full five years without once stepping foot in the US. I knew what it is like to have money AND now I know what it is like to be very poor for weeks on end. The far majority of people here in the US have little clue as to how good we truly have it.
Lived in the jungle, slept in camps, packed in supplies and equipment on mules, found good gold, learned to write and speak basic Spanish word by word from a dictionary, married a Bronzen Babe, drove a 4x4 Nissan traveled to nearly every country in C.A., almost died ONLY four times and had an absolute blast!
Did that up until last year. Why did I not stay? Never really left...I am only here for the $$$$. Gold price is down plus competition is getting pretty fierce down there.
I figure that there will surely be at least 2 more years of frac drilling in the Permian. Could go 5-10 or more. Wells should still be pumping 2-4 years after the drilling stops, even longer if they are re-fraced. Only God knows the technology we could come up with that could extend those numbers out even farther.
Some of you talk about comparative difficulties in OTR and Oilfield...Thats fine.
I am headed to the Permian Basin. I have my eye on the Cline formation. Sounds to me, Cooley, that your post is nothing but further confirmation to what I was predicting last year should be happening about now.
Cline is about to blow up!
I still have not made my mind up on weather to go into hauling crude out of school, or maybe Vac-Truck.
I already have the names of a couple companies that do hire and train for crude hauling right out of an accredited truck driving school.
O/O may be the thing for me after a year or so, but first things first...I need to start with a GOOD respected employer. I am allergic to BS, so naturally it will be the last thing I accept.
Cooley, it is possible I will be coming to meet your supervisors shortly.
TO ALL:
I am a "newbie" to truck driving, but that does not mean I am a "newbie" to hard work.
I figure that which ever company I start working with is going to have one serious advantage,...ME!
I may be a "newbie" with ZERO experience driving a truck out of school but I will tell you what...my personal and professional excellence, strong moral values and very dedicated work ethic put most people I know to shame. That is not a ####y statement, just happens to be the truth. Some may not like that and that is fine with me.
I have been back in country now for less than 6 months and I tell you that life for me is WIDE open. I do what I say and say what I do.
The only thing I got against me is the fact there are only 24 hours in a day and my body is not a machine. Boy if there was only more time and I could physically meet a higher demand.... I am positive that I would find a way to stretch myself even more. You better believe it!
BTW: You could not drag me into OTR at the pay they offer. That may be for some people and I am thankful for that.
Oilfield is for me and Lord willing, that's where I am going.Last edited: Feb 11, 2014

This thread has really got me excited to get into the industry! I am only 18 years old and am from Ohio, but the day I turn 21 I plan on going to school to get my CDL. I have a question if you guys don't mind. How long do you think this "boom" will last for? Cause I'm only 18 and still got two more years till I get my CDL. So, do you think there will still be enough work on the oilfields for me to take a shot to find work down there in Texas or up in the Dakotas? Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it!!!

Yeah I know I can get my CDL at 18 but I think I'll have a hard time finding a job driving because of the insurance. I will look into other oilfield jobs as well, but I really want to get into driving. It has been something I have always wanted to do and am going to do it when I am old enough. But do you guys think that if I wait until I'm 21, will jobs in the oilfield for drivers still be plentiful? Thanks for the help!
-
Nobody can really answer that with any certainty. Yes, I "think" there will still be plenty of work 3 years from now...I wouldnt be here otherwise. But...that can all change quickly. There are jobs that you are definitely capable of doing now...if you choose. Have you decided against college or trade school?
