I just looked up different states rules on irp and ifta, all the states said basically the same thing but worded a little different. My question is will I need apportioned plates if my truck gcwr is 26000? And if I don't need them what will I need since I'm over 10,001 on the trailer? Thank for all the help guys.

Yes, you need an apportioned plate unless you want to buy a temp permit every time you cross out of your home state. I don't think you do. Look at U-Haul type trucks, even though they don't put the plate where it belongs, they are apportioned plates. You could probably get away without an IFTA account for a while but there are states that charge more for auto fuel.

I think I messed up with the truck and trailer part. My truck and trailer will be grossed at 26000. Or at 25999 if that's easier.

NO it is 26,001 lbs and above - not 26,000 lbs.

I know a bunch of people who do not have apportioned plates because they are under 26,001 lbs GVW.

Plate the truck at 26,000 (commercial or truck, not apportioned) and get a tolkon plate on the trailer.

Sweet, do you need to do the drug consortium under 26,001 or is that 10,001 trailer? And since I won't need the plate will I need ifta? Or HUT?

IRP and IFTA have the same criteria.

A power unit in interstate commerce needs IRP and IFTA if:

    1) it has two Axles and a gross Vehicle weight or registered gross Vehicle weight in excess of 26,000 pounds
    2) it has three or more Axles, regardless of weight, or
    3) is used in combination, when the gross Vehicle weight of such combination exceeds 26,000 pounds

IRP and IFTA are NOT based on GVWR or GCWR or any other RATING.

They are based on REGISTERED WEIGHT or ACTUAL WEIGHT of the vehicle or vehicle combination.

Even if your GVWR is 26,000# or under, if your actual weight or registered weight is over 26,000#, you need IRP and IFTA.

I am wondering about the drug testing thing. If you have your own authority, I was under the impression that no matter what, you have to have a drug testing program as part of the FMCSA requirements. It doesn't have a thing to do with the truck or trailer or apportioned plate/IRP/IFTA but with the driver themselves no matter what they drive.

You are under the wrong impression. Stay under 26001lbs and no drug testing. I suggest not using drugs while driving a truck though.
