Big difference between legal and safe. Legal will depend on where you are, here in Ohio you would be allowed 20,000 on back axle, 12,000 on front axle, unless it has super-singles AND the suspension to carry 13,500. Safe will depend on the condition of the vehicle.
-
Georgia. I get the axle weights-but is there a formula/spec for towing capacity?
-
As far as I can tell from this it will depend on the trailer. You can gross up to 80 k,
-
Does truck manufacturers give a spec for this? How would you find if so? Thanks for help!

Here is basis for question...im interested in purchasing a 93 ford l8000 with 300 cummins and 10 speed. The heaviest thing I have to haul is an excavator that weighs #27,000. Im trying to avoid a ten wheeler because of a few issues. Cost, insurance, manuverability, storage. I would like your opinions. Thanks guys.

I've got the same size digger and have pulled it with a single axle ok but tandem
/Tri axle is a lot better when bad things happen. -
Any specific experiences? Thanks.
-
Slippery roads, emergency stops. I assume your going to haul stuff once I'm awhile, a tandem or Tri will pay for itself in first month over a single axle.
-
Thanks. I'm in georgia so no triaxles. When I order stone the loads (tandems) are usually 14 to 16 tons because of the weight limits. In NY I hauled 11 tons all the time on my single axle truck. I was was quoted 2400/yr for ins. for a single x and 5500/yr for tandem. My truck use is sporatic so I don't know if I would haul enough to offset costs. If I planned on utilizing the tandem by extra hauling I would have to put on a driver.
