In my last Thread I talked about "Hit and Run" Drunk driver that hit my truck in Van Nuys,Ca. I just got a letter from Van Nuys D.A. wanting costs to replace personal items lost in Accident. I do have a list of things that were broke, But most of the reciepts are gone. Does that matter ? Is it O.K. to turn in the list and hope for the best? Or am I out of luck in getting my things replaced?

Submit any information you have. What can it hurt?

Sorry I should have gone further. I'd list what it cost you for your down time and hotel costs. Anything you can think of that came out of your pocket you should list. I had a car stolen from me years ago and the court wanted the same information. I didn't have recepts for items that I had for awhile and the court still took them into account. Just don't make it sound like you're trying to ripped the guy off. And listing all your expenses is reasonable.

A while back,as an o/op,I got audited by the IRS.I showed no profit for that year. The IRS calls this a red flag.It was a bad year but I did keep every reciept for everything.I went to their office with a very large box of reciepts for the year. One look at that box by the auditor and simple phone call to my CPA,case closed. Now,unlike the IRS,the DA is proably just looking for a ballpark figure to determine your loss incured by the actions of the defendent. The case will go to court and if the defendent is found guilty, you may find yourself reimbursed for his actions.Don't worry about reciepts.Make a complete list of items that you have lost or incured and print out online the fair market value.TV,CB,hotel room, rental car, lost wages, food.Simply go online and print out the page that shows the cost and the item and submit it to the DA.If you find that you can't collect compensation from the court,go after his insurance company.
