You got that one right. The only thing I might add is try to use progressive shifting and see what happens. I believe anything over 6mpg is good.

The fuel has nothing to do with it. Diesel is the same and it doesn't matter who you buy it from. In fact the diesel most likely came out of the same above ground storage tank. Temp. will play into it but relatively in small amounts.

Years ago I had the same problem and the company was all over me too. Come to find out I was filling the tank like it should be filed and stopped the flow at the first cut off of the nozzle. But that was before the ECM's came out and the company was using the fuel tank for milage.

Try to find out when idle time starts to cut in. I don't think it counts if you idle for 1 second, but maybe 15 or a minute. I don't know what mine is, but if I'm somewhere where I have to stop, like scale or a light, whatever, I creep up to it, stop for a few seconds, creep a few feet, stop, creep some more. My theory is that this keeps the idle clock from kicking in, or in the least it lowers it. They can't say I'm idling if I'm going 1 mph. I think I might be off setting some of my idle time. Then again, the engine's computer never shows me my idle time until I pull the yellow knob. If my foot is still on the clutch then it doesn't pop up. These are complicated questions I'm sure only a handful of people at your company know that answer too.

Many (not all) companies use a split timer. Low, Mid, High Idle times.

Low being the periods at lights etc. Mid being a short term idle while parked, high describing anything longer than 5 minutes while the brake is set.

Most, if not all total those times together. No way to hide it.

The only way I know of for him to get 7 mpg, is to be hauling light loads or bob tailing all the time.

Other factors, (a favorite CFI tactic) companies using dispatched miles, instead of the actual miles the truck run to figure MPG.

A bunk heater could help...but he is basically hosed. And it sounds to me, as if he is on his way out of a job...they are looking for an "legally acceptable" excuse to terminate him.

Manually shift that auto. That will give you the biggest increase in mileage. Most autos want to shift at a high rpm, and then downshift too early, and they really mess things up on slower two lane roads with constant shifting.

Anytime you can control the transmission to get lower rpms you will see increased mileage.

Your best MPG depend on more then speed. Your best MPG speed depends on the engine and it's setting, the final gear in tranny, and the gear ratio of your drive final. With today's truck, the shape of the truck and trailer also play a big part.

With everything the same except final gear ration do you think a truck with 4.55 will get the same MPG at 62 as compared to one with 3.55 or 3.23's?
