With the way things are today, i don't even bother..But i also have a 200+ pound Cane Corso that rides along. If they are of the persistent type i let my dog jump on the seat and she can bark at them until they leave ( which doesn't take very long )

lol, and my kids call ME a pollyanna.....most of these people would not work even if they had a job. There are some who may even be telling the truth but they are the exception, not the rule. I am sorry, but your farm would be a miserable failure.

I totally agree with you on this. A lot of these beggars need to get a job
    .

By the same token, JOBS ARE HARD TO COME BY. I know because I was out of work twice myself.

The 1st. time I was out of work, it was for 11 months, almost a year, (5/9/1992 - 4/12/1993).
Truthfully, I had done something wrong, (NOTHING CRIMINAL OR IMMORAL), and my "record" followed me everywhere. By the GRACE OF GOD, an old mechanic gave me a break working at a gas station. I was there for 2 years, (4/13/1993 - 8/13/1995), when I was able to find another job afterwards.

The 2nd. time I was out of work, it was for 7 months, (9/17/2006 - 4/16/2007).
I had to leave Wichita KS, (10/9/2006), to help my 2 sisters care for our elderly mother back in Hartford CT. She passed away about a year later, (9/30/2007).
In the mean time, it had taken me a full 7 months to find a job. Unemployment was quite high back then due to a lot of industry, both manufacturing and insurance leaving Hartford CT.

Being unemployed is one of the most UNPLEASANT things that a person can go through
    .
Only 4 other things that would be worse and that is losing your capabilities, health, freedom, privacy, or all 4.

I TRULY and GENUINELY wish everyone the best of GOOD LUCK!!

Hard to deny there are more professional beggars than real ones but what if there was a toll free number something like 1-800-ImlOser for anybody who needs help in exchange for a job?
Wouldn't it be difficult to justify standing in the street with a sign in dirty hands?

It could be done on semi voluntary basis, not sure,I know it's a touchy feely subject. Should a person be entitled to the same rights and freedoms if they do not contribute? When you have a parasite in your body you just exterminate them, you do not treat them like a useful digestive bacteria. So if a person chooses to beg, maybe it's up to the society to point them in the right direction. Even if it seems like not the best option for them at the moment.

If I'm in the truck, I pull my digital camera out, or cell phone, take a pic of them. Then tell them to bugger off.
Same thing if they are selling something I usually think is stolen or a scam. Here's one a few weeks ago in the pilot at Jackson, MS, trying to sell a new 'laptop'. (He had a friend driving him around the lot in a jeep compass)

If you buy stuff in truck stop parking lots you are likely to get ripped off in one way or the other, it's either a scam, stolen, or they will just take your money.

There used to be a gang that worked the truckstops in the SE, selling 'corningware'. They must have bought a container of cheap, chinese, knock off ceramic cookware sets that looked like corningware, the kind you can buy for $10 at dollar general.
They had a large, old extended length, white dodge van. One or two would walk around the truck stop, walk up to truckers, 'Hey, I'm a trucker, I just unloaded nearby, and have ONE extra box of CORNINGWARE, I'll let you have for $40.' You look at the box and it is cheap knock off stuff.
I saw the same van and people all over the SE 7-8 years ago, pulling the same 'I just happen to have one BOX left that was overage on a shipment' crap.

When I lived in FL, I saw a bum working the same offramp on I-75 for years. One day I saw him walking a block or so away from his 'post', and watched him go behind a nearby shopping center. I followed him, thinking he'd go dumpster diving. No, he pulled some keys out of his pocket, and climbed into a year old small car, with plates from an adjacent county, and jumped on the interstate. The sign he used said something like 'starving homeless veteran'. Another day I saw the same guy get handed a couple of sandwiches from a car waiting in line on the ramp. As soon as the car was out of sight, 'starving veteran' threw the sandwiches in a ditch.

For a while I was seeing 'homeless' beggars with cellphones, including one young couple near Quincy, FL, working an off ramp near the Pilot and FJ. They also had two dogs with them. I would be happy feeding the dogs, but not them.

Look closely at some of these beggars. Many may be wearing old clothes, but the real ones are usually pretty dirty. I've seen some pretty clean looking 'beggars'.
Don't hand them money. And if you feel sympathetic to the beggars and people selling things in truck stops, look for the signs you probably don't notice, that state the lots are for truck drivers only, and if you don't have a CDL, you are trespassing. I'm tired of them bothering me, and some are very rude.

25 years ago I had one approach me in a rest area in Louisiana as I was walking back to my truck after using a pay phone.
I told him 'no', and he punched me in my back as I walked away. I turned around and decked the junky looking jerk. An old lady in the rest area who just saw ME hit him, yelled out 'Leave that poor man alone, you big bully! I'm calling the police.'

I just climbed in my truck and left.
