I always do a post trip before bedtime....I do them all pre trips, in the middle of trips, and post trips.....because if anything goes wrong then it would be my fault for not catching the problem...![]()

I'm sure LogsRus will say the same thing. It must be done at the end of the each days work. §396.11.

I never said it's required to show 15 minutes. What I was trying to get across is that the items you are required to check will take at least 15 minutes if you do it right. You said a pre-trip is just a walk around and believe me I would have never said a word except for the fact that some new drivers read this board all the time and look for correct information from driver with as many years as you have. I suggust you read § 392.7 and then tell me it takes just a couple of minutes. I know you don't do that because I read your other posts but some of these kids might just do a walk around and then go out a kill someone because they didn't check what they should have. Especially the brakes.

The regs state log it as you do it and account for the time you took to actually perform that on duty function. Any time less than 15 minutes can be flagged from the drive line just be aware that the time shown for the flag will actually be deducted from the time you showed you were driving which might elevate your average speed to a speeding violation.
I was repeating what Texas State trooper Monty Dial explained in regard to the pretrip and post trip. In my case I have adapted to show 15 minutes on duty for both the pretrip AND the post trip and no I have never been questioned or fined for either way. I have had my logs scrutinized several times over the years and have always been in compliance.Click to expand...
You of course "I hope you are doing both inspections" are doing great in my opinion because I feel both are important and should be looked at.
I do have a problem with drivers (for their own good) not doing a post-trip because it "CAN" and "WILL" save them time one day which means money in their pocket. I could care less about that, but stress it to help you guys/gals

Sorry but a pre-trip is more than just a simple walk around. If you read the FMCSR 392.7 you'd see that a driver must be satisfied that specific parts of the truck and are in good working order. 2 minutes shows you're not doing the inspection properly. It takes at least 15 minutes. I'm surprised you never got hit for that.Click to expand...
"No commercial motor vehicle shall be driven unless the driver is satisfied that the following parts and accessories are in good working order
So if you inspected it at the end of your day and no one drove that vehicle you might be satisfied everything is ok!
Again I stress check what "could" go wrong before you get behind the wheel.
It does not state you must inspect all the items, it does state you must in writting state you have checked all the items in 396.11. See below
Every motor carrier shall require its drivers to report, and every driver shall prepare a report in writing at the completion of each day's work on each vehicle operated and the report shall cover at least the following parts and accessories
If you read them 2 closely it's basically saying at the end of your hard days work you should be inspecting the equipment.
I feel it should depend on what time of day you stop. If you stop at night your pre-trip should be done in writting. If you stop at day time you should do a post-trip in writting. Since all drivers are doing different schedules

You have a valid point Gashauler. I do not dispute a THOROUGH inspection does in fact take more than 2 minutes. I was attempting to relay the information extolled by Texas State Trooper Monty Dial on the "Ask The Law " segment I heard on Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 147.
The more thorough an inspection the greater chance you will detect something wrong. Unfortunately we have many folks (myself included) that do not get down on the ground to inspect the underside of the trailer, pulling slack adjusters, or checking for leaking wheel seals. I actually count on the maintenance department to catch the things I didn't during the pm services. If I discover a serious problem then I will address it right away. I know you all will probably think less of me now but hey I am just being honest. I am Glad some of you fellas actually do get down and dirty to check out your rigs. Your a better inspector than me! -

Whatever is written in yellow is not very readable. Never mind, after it has a background in the quotes, I can actually see it.Click to expand...
