Wanted to talk to a student to reverify before I posted this.

In school they flash the number 14 in front of the students, and they ask what does this number mean to you (or something like that). Typical responses are the number of hours you can drive. Then they get a sombering moment. This 14 is the number of drivers who die on the road each day. This 14 was also reinforced in our latest driver safety meeting.

    14 deaths X 365 days = 5110 dead drivers per year.

According to the website http://www.antiwar.com the US casualties total since the war began on march 19th 2003 is 3271 in combat, and another 732 non combat fatalities for a total of 4003.

4003 deaths / 5 years = 801 of our sons and daughters deaths per year

I placed theese numbers to show you that it is safer to be in Iraq than on our own nations highways.

So lets get back to the problem.

Vet driver has his pay shorted.
Vet driver asks PAYROLL why was pay shorted.
Payroll says vet driver worked a half day
Vet driver asks Payroll what makes half a day
Payroll states that half a day is whatever the DSR codes in for a day
Vet driver asks DSR what a half a day is
DSR says he is not sure maybe 6-8 hours

Stop the press right there. Hold on. Wait a second. Lets look at this right here.

DSR says he is not sure maybe 6-8 hours.

Now according to payroll the DSR is the one who codes the drivers day in. Can we agree on that. You mean to tell me with a straight face that this DSR does not know how to code in a half day vs a full day?

Vet driver says he has been with the company for 9 months and has been shorted like this 3 times. Whoa Nelly, I wonder how many other vet drivers are on this DSR's board.

If the DSR was so unsure on how to code the days pay in why didn't he ask the fleet manager. How many other vet drivers have lost pay due to this oversight, and more importantly is Roehl willing to reimburse our vet drivers for pay earned that was never paid?

    Or

Is this just another way to take advantage of our vet drivers?

Read between the lines then make your choice.

Next: Fly drive: I don't need a reason to like or dislike Roehl. As a man I consider it my responsibility to do the right thing, everytime, everyday. I consider this problem to be an insult to our vet drivers. A young soldier may see Roehls ad and say wow that's the life for me. Declines reenlistment for the 50,000.00 a year job only to find out that it is pock marked with false statements from the people he is now working for.

I thank Kam for showing one of the ways the company will try to take your money. I hope that people read that and figure out how to side step that issue. I am sure that many more issues will come into play and I only hope our vet drivers point them out so others do not suffer any loss of pay.

I stopped my retelling of Kams story cause everything after his DSR "Miscommunicated" was like looking for blinker fluid.

Your argument that Iraq is safer than on the highways is completely asinine and an insult. Use 14 all you like, considering that number represents traffic fatalities INVOLVING commercial motor vehicles, not just fatalities that are truck drivers. Then consider the number of motorist on the highway each day throughout the nation and that number is a very small, albeit still to high, percentage. I can honestly say I would rather take my chances on the roads here, than being VIED'd there.

Then, perhaps this particular DSR was playing ignorant. Perhaps he really didn't know. Who knows? I am not saying that the OP was not screwed out of some money, I just don't feel it is fair to say the company is preying on vets. If that many vets where being screwed out of money, there would be a lot more attention directed at the situation. I learned when I was in the military to watch my pay and check to make sure I was receiving all my entitlements; it's common practice for everybody. If something is wrong, we were very vocal about it. I seriously doubt if people were getting screwed out of money left and right, this would be the first we have heard of it.

Roehl offers a great opportunity to vets. Free training with no commitment? Salary for the first two years in an industry that can be unpredictable? Why isn't that a good deal? Do you think people looking at separating aren't going to do their research before that time comes? Nobody is forcing any of us vets to sign that line. We have every right to choose mileage pay over the salary. We don't even have to use our GI benefits if we don't want to. Is Roehl the deal breaker for staying in/getting out? I doubt it, but its nice to know you have a chance at a decent job if you decide to get out.

I agree its unfortunate the OP went through that ordeal, and I hope it was an honest mistake. But to say Roehl preys on vets is laughable.

Ok, well it only took 9 months for the first vet to speak out, lets see how many other "honest mistakes" start popping up. Time is of course on my side

The odd part is if you work less than 11 days of the 2 weeks they short your salary. Yet if you work over 11, lets say 13 they don't reward you. SO if you are on the honor program anything over 11 days worked is for free. As far as paying for half a day that is BS. If you work one hour of a given day and are a salary employee then you are to be compensated full salary for that day. That is the federal law. They have on a couple occassions tried to keep me out past 11 but I refused. I got reminded that it must be give and take, yet I only see Roehl taking. SO far my checks have been shorted twice in 6 months. Both times I was avalible to work and was not given a load that day. My recruiter told me by enrolling in the honor program you are guarenteed a salary. I was very clear about sitting at a terminal and he told me that I would be paid regardless. Well he lied ? Roehl is a good company and they need to work out all the bugs in the honor program.

Thank you EK for your response. I agree a salary is a salary, if you are sitting it is not your fault but yet you get denied the pay. This is not the mark of an honorable company.

Don't misunderstand, I like driving for Roehl, just wish they would maintain the same standards they expect from us on a daily basis

Remember this used to be a driver based and driver focused company, and I for one hate seeing it slip into the toilette.

At no point huh? Did you actually read the post? My favorite cry for special treatment came at the end when the OP stated that any lie told to an ex service member must be punished by firing squad. Blue makes many asinine comments but this wasn't one of them.

Near as I can tell the OP described several problems then described how to get them fixed. I must be missing the reason for the excitement.

Hey Rum its 14 people killed just by the trucks. There is a hell of a lot more people killed in car wrecks every year than in Iraq/Afganistan.

Thanks for the feedback everybody. The one that stands out most wast "did you extpect to be treated differently than others?"... Not myself personally, but if I new I had hired someone who had risked their life overseas in the military for whatever reason, cheating that person would NOT be the first thing I would do. To me it seems especially low (even for management) for somone to cheat a vet. But like I said, I'm old school and if Roehl expects me to have princials, corner stone values, blah blah, I expect THEM to act somewhat the same (totally unrealistic expectation unfortunately).
The other one was about the non-stop work pace while on salary. I do like that and is why I chose Flat. I actually do feel bad when I bump into other Roehl drivers who've been sitting at the TS waiting for a load (what B.S.) and I can barely stop to talk because my ops are so tight. And I dont mind taking these short hauls so the OTR guys can get the milage loads. It's win win for us drivers for once.
My main point is for vets and everybody else coming in is know the rules. Roehl management (at Marshfield) would not tell or show me the rules when I asked them to. I got the needed info from Recruiting and Training at Gary!
Load up log book, good info! I actually started doing that and barley made it home last week!:biggrin_25517: See you all out on the road! Time to chase the wifey!

Thanks, you nailed it on the head. The company and the program might not be perfect, but it seems irrational to say they are preying on individuals.
