I am having trouble with the information asked with online applications to companies. Specifically when asked for social security number and date of birth. I know they say that the site is secure, but it just seems ripe to caught up in stolen identity issues. How can one apply without giving that information when it is a required field on the application? Any comments or ideas?

You cant not online.I have never had that problem with applications and I have filled out many. But your next option would be to have the company fax or mail you an application either thru snail mail or email. If you don't give out all the info the application ask for online then it won't get sent.

If you don't have one already, a credit monitoring service is a worthwhile thing to have. Credit Karma (.com) gives them to you for free.

Don't use wifi when filling out the application. See if you can leave the field blank. If not allowed to leave the field blank then make up dummy numbers and put in the comments section that you will give them the information over the phone.

Bad idea imho. What if those "dummy numbers" are another person's ss number? They punch in your social security number on your application to start a background check on you, if you don't put one down or use a fake one, they aren't gonna hire you. Almost all jobs require online applications today, you can't apply on paper to Walmart, Lowes, Burger King or probably even the local taco stand. The poster sounds ultra paranoid to me. He is much more likely to get his identity stolen from giving a waiter his debit card or scanning his debit card than from putting in an application.

But if you put in an application with a PHONY SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER what do you think the company will think about you? Are they gonna offer some guy who applied with a fake social security number a job? Nope!

Great question. I've always gave a Fake SSN online, If the company is really interested in you ( way down the pipeline and almost hired ), Make sure you mention it to Interviewer / HR that you gave a false SSN. Tell them of your concerns. Have them re-run it. I don't care, It's my personal information. Tough crap

I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM. Sure it's odd to explain your reason, but tough crap, Worked in the landfill for years. Seen way too many SSNs floating around.

Yes they will. ABF and UPSF hired me, Give a reason why, Tough crap they have to re-run it. Then again my background is landfill environment easily justified using crap SSNs.

OP is not Paranoid. It's preventive and thinking outside the box.

The best thing to do is to call the company and tell them you don't have internet access and if they can send you an application.

I don't fill out those apps online, don't care to hear that this is the only way to do it, been there with id theft and other issues while I know most of these sites can be hacked easy.
