Not sure what you mean there ... on an interstate a garmin will tell you to take "exit # so and so / highway number so and so". So on interstates it has the logic to understand and refer to highway numbers, it's once you get off the interstates that it doesn't. It would be nice to know that when it says in 46 miles, TR on XYX Ave, it means in 46 miles TR on US 50.

But I've never found this to be a deal breaker in terms of judging a GPS

 

And don't forget to use garmins poi loader and add your own custom pois. Head over to poifactory.Com for custom poi. They have them for all truck stops etc.

 

Its not the interstates I usually have a problem with, it's the US highways and state highways that they use names on.

 

I have two Garmins, although neither is a truck-specific one, so this may be slightly different for your version.

To find something along your route:
[Where To] [Near] [My Active Route]
Then you can choose anything from POIs, Favourites, Extras, Towns, etc., just as you would if programming in a destination. The GPS will then list the directory of items that you chose that are along your route.

 

I use the POI factory for that kind of stuff. I works very well. http://www.poi-factory.com/poifiles. My old Rand 510 worked well, but the new one didn't so I went with Garmin and have no problems.

 

u know there is a little book of truck stops u can buy for like 5 bucks. lists all mile markers, parking spots available etc, it even has rest areas, best of all it wont go blank on ya

 

I have the book also, but it is easier and faster to let the GPS look it up for you. After dark when you can't see the print without pulling over, this is the best way to go. I've been behind the wheel for over 20 years and would never want to go back to the old way of navigating. A lot of the old ways I miss, but not that part.

After 19 years all my truck stops I would Park at have closed down or bought out by mega truck stops. Places I would Park at 10pm are now full at 5pm. When did trucking became a 8-5 job?

 

That's part of it but another part of it is many more trucks and drivers producing essentially the same productivity. Trains are moving more goods cross country and many more distribution logistics models being used and there are more trucks needed to run the local/regional side of things. And few who are are not able to be home nights are making any good money or running anywhere near their maximum driving hours anymore.
