After 25 yrs OTR health issues have taken me off the road. Looking at being an agent. I figure I have learned a little something that may help me on that side of the industry.
I have narrowed it down to just 2 places, One is Network FOB and the other is Landstar.
The Agent I would be under is in Fla. and requires a 250.00 training cost. Network FOB will have no training charge.
Does any body have any useful advice or info on either of these companies? Maybe you are an Agent for Landstar and interested in training and old driver on the finer points of brokering.
Thanks in advance.
Need advice on which company would be better.

Have you considered being a secret agent?
Perhaps FBI?Jokingypsy Thanks this. -
Gee Cargo I would have never thought about that. Thanks.
CargoWahgo and 281ric Thank this. -
Are you going in cold or do have(think you have)an account? Or are they just looking for someone to do all the scut work?
I sure wouldn't pay to learn.John Massey Thanks this. -
Well the Landstar Agent that charges 250 is in Fla. Network FOB Agent is not going to charge for training.
I will be starting with no book at all. The only thing I have are places I've loaded when I was on the road and of course cold calling.
I really don't want to get loads off the boards. I would rather build my own customer relationships. -
I myself did take a simple course to answer some of the questions that I had mostly ones dealing with setting up my own Brokerage and it has proven to be helpful! However with that being said there are many that you can take that you will get raped for I took the Agent class through FBI and found it to be interesting, there are classes out there that will charge upwards of 5 grand and take 4 days to cram two weeks worth of info in your head that you wont be able to remember 40 percent of 5 days after the class is over. As far as cold calling yes I have done some of it actually a lot of it but yes I to did resort to calling on the repeat customers that I had dealt with thru the years of being on the road. I built a small customer baseto get started with only 3 shippers but hey it's a start and we all have to start somewhere. As far as where to start as an Agent that is a wide open choice there are many options some good and some not so good some offer a commission split that you can actually make a living on while not spending 16 hours a day at the desk while others pay rates that arent so hot. I know of another broker, I took his Agent, who was paying his Agent 45% and when I first come in contact with him it had been more than a month since the Agent had been paid however the Broker wasnt missing any paychecks. The average Commision rate is between 55% to 60% I personally give my agents a little more than that depending on the usual factors of experince, portable business, attitude and so on. However I tell my folks constantly and it may be something to keep in mind, Don't focus on the money put your focus on the relationship and the money will come later!" Also howmuch support will the Brokers provide that you have spoken to meaning will they be around to answer your questions pertaining to Lane Development, Rates, Equipment, Insurance and so on or will they just give you a contract and turn you loose to make the mistakes on your own and hope that you learn from them? Regardless of which way you go in your search one thing will always remain, you will never make a driver happy in this business it would not matter is the shipper was paying 10 bucks a mile and you were only taking a penny a mile for your self they will still swear that you are taking to much and the rate is actually much higher than what you are trying to move it for! You will hear it everyday, "oh you need to come up on that rate I know you have already discounted it by 30%!" Rates are what they are the shippers are only going to pay so much and we have to attempt to move it and still make a little off of it but the drivers will never be happy either way! I wish you the best of luck in your journey into this business!

Thank you very much for your info. That's more of what I was looking for.
I know that coming in with NO book is going to be an uphill climb but I'm determined to make it work.
You are right in saying that drivers will never be happy. I've been all over this board the last few days and although most of the threads are a couple of years old you can tell who has a sour opinion of Brokers and Agents.
I really like the sound of what Landstar has to offer and the 250 the guy asks for start up and training don't seem unreasonable since I will be getting access to things the public don't have access to. I would however like to find another Agent that trained under this man to see what they think. If you search Youtube for freight agent training he is the only Landstar Agent I saw. Didn't know if it would be ok to name him here ..lol. Thanks again Shade Tree. -
Mr Massey let me have an e-mail address and I will send you something to get started with!
