    FOX 35 NEWS

LAKE MARY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35, Orlando) -- Truck drivers are threatening a strike on April 1, which could last for three days. They say they're sick of paying more than $4 a gallon for diesel fuel. They want the federal and state governments to give them relief from fuel surcharges. By going on strike, they believe it would send a message to consumers that, without trucks , America would shut down.

Whether prices for consumers would go up because of the strike remains to be seen.
FOX News Channel financial analyst Gary Kaultbaum says we have already been paying as much as 50 percent more for groceries over the last couple of years than in previous years because of inflation.

Kaultbaum says the dollar's decline is causing the economy to suffer and hitting consumers hard as everyday goods cost more. "Everything, milk, bread, cheese, oil, wheat, cereal, hostess twinkee, anything you buy ... Hersey's raised prices by 15 percent because they had to. Look at what the airlines did. They just raised ticket prices $50 to account for the oil prices and guess what that's passed on to the consumer which is no help," Kaultbaum said.

He expects prices to level off soon. "When the dollar drops commodities go up because they are disseminated in dollars on the other side of the pond and they get forced up because of that. So if the dollar starts acting better commodities are going to start coming down again."

Truck driver John Shannon says a three-day strike could make a big impact on the United States. He believes prices will increase. Trucker Wayne Down thinks the strike is a good idea, but isn't sure it will make a difference. He says a small number of truckers from independent companies are planning to strike, but truckers from bigger companies probably won't.

I have seen both good news reports and some not so good. We need to just stick to our guns about this. Some articles say we could have an impact, and some say this will make no difference at all. Well we are the ones in the drivers seat here. Lets just show them. Why work for less than what we are worth. My taxes more than doubled this year, and the teachers are getting raises. My kids are dumber than a box of rocks. I didn't see any discount on my taxes for poor schooling, didn't see a reduction in payroll for the schools. Time to draw the line. If we don't put a stop to this - we are the ones who are stupid to put up with this.

What bothers me is places like Swift, US Express and all the other big Co.s are hoping that independents do strike, that will give them more freight. If they would join in on it. then we would see some change fast. but they are hoping for their own reward from it. Till they are the ones hurting.

The only way for a strike to actually work is First of all we need representation a bunch of trucks stop wont matter without massive numbers. Second Everyone has to get involved we need o and o's like myself and get company drives on it to there is not enough on either side to do it solo, and most of all we have to get under the same banner so to say. People talk about time at home, fuel surcharge, just plain the price of fuel which true does not affect company drivers nearly as bad as independant drivers, rate the prices of the freight moving, or just simply the cost of the overhead just to run a truck without 1.50 a mile to the truck i cant bother with tires, fuel, hell routine maintance on the truck. its amazing to think just over 30(?) years ago there was a strike when the fuel was 59 cents and now we have the problem of it being 4+$ per gallon.. its the fuel that is killing us otr drivers and it leaving all the money in the short haul freight.

I just joined this forum today, searching for word on the impending strike, and also to get a "feel" for how drivers are reacting to it. Personally, the thought of a nationwide strike puts a sick feeling in my gut, initially. But, I also believe the time has come for people of this country to stand up for what is right. The taxation and price gouging of fuels has gone on WAY too long.
Once upon a time, a small group of men stood up to taxation, and eventually accomplished the goals set forth. It was later referred to as the Boston Tea Party.
As truck drivers, we literally carry this country, and our voices should be heard. It seems the biggest concern is the big freight companies; they're not going to support a strike. Consider this: How many of the "big" companies are carrying fuel? Shut down the fuel deliveries, everything shuts down. Even 50% reduction in fuel delivery is going to have a massive impact.
The people of this country, not just truckers, need to stand up and with one voice tell big brother, and big oil companies, "WE'RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE." Someone has to take the lead, and it may as well start here, where the burden of this country lies. On the shoulders of truck drivers.

The problems we are seeing now is because of big oil......these people who report the news know it but will not say it! The economy was fine until hurricane katrina and then oil went crazy over night. They were just waiting for a reason to raise the cost so they could make more money off of us and they are still doing it. The high cost of fuel that we as drivers have to pay has caused us to raise our rates to compensate and because of that everything you buy in the stores or to build your homes has gone up as well.

Exxon Mobil posted a record profit of over 40 billion dollars last year......they are driving this country straight into the grave but the government wont do a #### thing about it..

If we will all stand together April 1ST......WE WILL MAKE THEM DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!

Who is "we"? How many? Although it hasn't officially begun, it seems to me that there is lesser truck traffic. Maybe its just me. I just left Philly heading north on 476.
