has anyone ever thought of reducing the weight of the driveshafts to help reduce rotating weight for fuel economy. Would it be feasible to custom build them out of aluminum? Reducing rotating weight made a big difference in my dirt track cars. 15lbs=15horsepower in a race car.

Ever see a driveshaft that broke under power?
Trust me............you don't want to make it lighter on a class8.

On you tube there is a video of a carbon fiber drive shaft to reduce the weight of a truck. It is also super strong and not yet economically feasible.

Ever twist a beer can? That is what I see happening to that type of driveline.

I believe I have seen Dana(?) is offering/about to offer aluminum driveshafts.

I've had 2 Reitnouer all-aluminum trailers following me for 18 years in an application some said 'don't'. AL is OK by me. What about the new F-150 bed? Engine blocks and heads on many cars? Fifth wheels? Big-rig AL wheels been out there a long time. Maybe don't paint your AL driveshaft, but would be a little aggravating to polish.

Bigguns, will look at that vid.

    Forgot about airplane wings...

Off topic but GM was putting driveshafts made out of fiberglass in 1/2 ton pickups in the mid 90's. They were light but they had trouble with vibration. If I remember correctly they were all replaced under a special policy.

Carbon fiber- it's what the formula one drivers are using.

Tens of times light, tens of times stronger, long term durability is...questionable...But there you have it; future tech can only do so much.

Mack used an aluminum bolt on front subframe. Corrosion will be your biggest worry.
For everyone worried about twisting it like a beer can, maybe you should learn how to drive.

    cabwrecker Thanks this.

But...But...if I can't stomp on the gas pedal and make my turbo scream to let everyone know I'm a real driver- how WILL I FEEL LIKE A REAL DRIVER!?
