I like Brokers that would sell their Sister for a load. Don't need details, just a load number & a drop point.
Being a Broker is a lot more complicated. 900 hp, 18 over. 54000 bags. 48' Wilson. How much do you need it moved?

Myself also...I was leased to LS....it seemed it would work out for a "typical " leased O/O.....but someone who had their own auth.....
NO....I left due to rates too low...Granted, it would work if a long term contract / run was avail....
too many fee's for what I did myself w/my own Auth....
....what really got to me ...was...my BCO adviser ...was trying me to convince me...
"Sometimes you need to haul low paying freight, to reposition your truck to a better area"( her exact words)...
My comment was:.." I'll drive empty, and get over 11mpg, if I want to get to a better freight area,
I don't need to haul cheap freight for fuel $ and tax's.
and also...I really, really...didn't and don't go to cheap freight areas"...
my 2 cent's....

I'm curious about becoming an o/o after I get a few years under my belt. Do o/o stay out months at a time like I've heard? How do you guys run? Is it possible to make it running a 7/3 or 7/4? Just interested in what everyone had to say. I keep being told stay company don't ever become o/o.

It is all about learning an market and figuring out how to capitalize on it. If you are in a bad market you may need to stay our a couple weeks. But unless I got a hot load to AZ I would be home weekly. But the key is figuring out a market, building relationships with people that will pay for your superior service and providing it.Bigdubber Thanks this.

Question: I was just about to apply to Landstar when a friend called and said he just setup his own authority and offered me an opportunity to run under his numbers. He doesn't want to profit off me but I want to pull as much weight as I can, and in the same token don't want to profit off him.
My plan is to buy the truck and trailer. Run under my own base plates if possible. I still don't understand all the ins and outs of this. And cover any additional costs he incurs pulling me under, ie insurance and permits.... I'm still wrapping my head around it all.
Can anyone provide a link specifically pertaining to leasing on under an independent. He just has the one truck he drives and I will be number two.
Is there anything I need to be careful about? In regards to him getting me in hot water paperwork wise?
Sorry to hijack, should probably start a new thread.... -
Its not difficult to be independent, you just have to work smart.
Have your equipment tip-top shape. find good loads on the board. have a good factoring company and don't factor those small short moving loads,,,, just add them to your separate bank account for cash flow.
eventually you will make it.
The key is...... work, work, work. When you are not driving you are doing maintenance, or billing, or collection, or something else.
There is only a fell days off in a year. The phone is on all the other times.
If you want to have a vacation, and days off, and holidays, weekends. then,,,better drive for someone else....
But if you want to work hard and go where you want to go, haul what you want to haul. Then you can make it.... -
To do what you are talking about; Truck insurance (Liability and Collision), IFTA, New York State Highway use tax, IRB plates can all be yours without any body else. Then what you need to have from the Carrier you lease on to is Operating authority (MC numbers), active USDOT numbers, good cargo insurance. The MC, and Cargo insurance is what has to be the same for when you deal with brokers and or shippers. They need that to be the same company name on both. You might also look into Kentucky operating authority if you are going to go through there.icsheeple Thanks this.

10-4 thank you. I'll have to check and see if he got KY. He's using a company for his IFTA filing. He's also setup factoring, which I'm ok with until I get a nice bank roll going. Hopefully in a year or two I will pull my own numbers.

That is some of the most ridiculous things I ever heard, work work work no time off really? I run all my own stuff and do everything on my own IFTA and all I don't think I work much at all I did $5,700 this week and did 2310miles only three loads and sleep in the truck two nights, reloaded today for a Monday drop in greenfield,IN for $3,100 than jumping up to Fort Wayne for a load of beams going right back to Houston pays $2,900 I'll pullout Sunday morning drop Monday after lunch bounce up reload at midnight than head back drop Wednesday day and be back home so 4days of work $6,000 and only moving two loads.....that's not working hard it's working smart!!hawkjr, icsheeple, dannythetrucker and 1 other person Thank this.
