Fellow pumpkin drivers, I'm considering obtaining a U S Passport and learning the cross-boarder systems used by Schneider. I'm thinking This could allow me more options for fright when I'm available. But the cost of a passport is $135 with a 10 year renewal of $110. So I don't know if a passport would pay for itself. Also, how difficult is it to actually cross into and out of Canada?

    thanks,

$135/10 = $1.35 a year. Surely going to Canada will make you more than $2 a year extra, so you'd be ahead of the game. Just don't lease that passport, I hear leases are bad.

EDIT: that was a bit snarky or glib, take your pick. My point was that the cost of the passport isn't a consideration if cross border work nets you more than you're making now. Sure you have to take the time out and cover the expense of the passport, but in the end will you get more pay out of doing cross border runs?

Where are you located, and what sort of cross border runs are available to you? Some members with experience might be able to answer/guide you.

Your math is a little off $135/10 = $13.50 per year still cheap.:biggrin_255:

My face is very red. Yes, $13.50 a year I must've transposed the renewal fee... something, something... math is hard.

I'm not talking from personal experience, so take this at face value.

I wanted to go to Canada, and I asked a driver that I know well that used to go up there. He said that it is flat out not worth it. He said that getting into Canada is easy, but trying to get in the US is a big PITA. There is also a driver on here, disorder, that I think used to come from Canada into the US. Might want to send him a PM.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but for some reason I'm in a typing mood.

What sort of pains were they:
    Delay due to traffic?
Delay due to BP & Customs?
    Inspections?
Refusal at border due to paperwork?

You should see those trucking lanes backed up at the border leaving Buffalo on 190 and connecting to Queen Elizabeth Way.

You'll being sitting for a few minutes. But if you return there to cross back over you may be sitting hours waiting to get back in. Long long lines to sit in your rig and wait.

That's just one way into Ontario. There are many other crossings that are better than Buffalo. Knowing where OP might run could help them out with information.

EDIT: D'oh OP is based in Knoxville TN. SNI has a Terminal in Aberfoyle Ontario. The Closest crossing between these two cities is at Port Huron, MI. If you have to cross the border in Southern Ontario Sarnia-Port Huron is probably the best. That said, it's the entry into the Ontario 401 corridor, a very busy place. CMV must be governed to 105Km/h (65m/h) in Ontario and Quebec.

Lots of backups at DETROIT as well as Port Huron and the bridges at Niagara / Fort Erie , heck the 1000 ISLAND Crossing has backups at times
