Sometimes I worry about Mills, if you ever go tanker we are taking your lighters. I enjoy driving, can't wait to get back on the road. But the industry is changing, we would have to start another thread for whether it is for the better or the worse. With the challenges drivers face it is hard to tell someone in a career that probably makes substantially more money then a trucker to make that change. If you were sitting across the diner table from me I would probably try to talk you out of it. If you can handle the income difference and you think you would really enjoy it, give it a shot, just take the advice you get here and really do your home work before making such a big decision .
Adam
PS) On the joking side you could combine the two and be a driver and a freelance pharmaceutical distributor! ( drug dealer, but that would be another thread too )
Does anyone like their job?

Is there any way you can use your pharmd degree in another setting? Although you may not make as much as a pharmicist, I'm sure you could use it in a nonprofit setting or something.
This risk of taking a break doesn't seem so bad in your case. I'd think pharmacists would be in high-demand, so you could probably find another job nearby your home if things don't work out in the transport industry, or you decide to return.
Does your university have career counselors? Most universities have them and are good for years after you graduate. They may be able to help you find a better-fitting gob. Mine helped me out, but I wish I would have went to trucking 5-6 years ago and built up my skills rather than wasting time at school. but that's me.
Good luck,

Yeah ...I love all three of my jobs. The first 8 hours on duty are great, the second 8 hours ...not quite so much! The third 8 hours, (where I sleep at the "office"), are bliss. The best part is that, when I cobble all 24 hrs. together, I get almost a days pay! At the same time, trucking may save my marriage, because, my wife said that, "Absence makes the heart grow fonder", ...then she told me to "get lost for a while"! All that distance may keep us together.

i like it a lot at this point, but that will possibly change over the next few years. After getting a year exp, I got another job,, settled in with a great company that's not up my rectum 24/7, but the FMCSA will never stop making new rules. They probably won't stop until you're wearing a heart monitor wired into the computer, a camera pointed at your face, a sleep monitor and who knows what else.
So if you've got this vision of being a free spirit rolling down the big road in an 80,000 lb Harley ,, you should prolly think of it more as being a rat on a hamster wheel , in a laboratory, being observed 24/7moneyburner Thanks this. -
Man, it's amazing how wonderful life can be when you live for what makes YOU happy and stop worrying about what others think.moneyburner, Chinatown and Bigdubber Thank this.

Irrelevant. I've trained ex-doctors and lawyers. Former "professionals" of the real variety seemed to like truck driving... but that was before the Hours Of Service were revised by people obviously crazier than an outhouse rat.
Have you considered pharmaceutical sales? That occupation has probably gone to ####, too. "Corporations" have discovered the easiest money to make is that which is not paid to employees, and it's overwhelmingly an employer's market today, so I imagine commissions have dwindled to ~nothing.Jokingypsy and duurmandy Thank this. -
I. know some "streetcorner pharmacists " who were highly valued by their customers , and made large amounts of $$$ , till they got arrested and sent to prison !duurmandy and Jokingypsy Thank this.

Personally i love to drive, have plenty of alone Time, see the countryside and spend hours in meditative thought. It is a career and a lifestyle more than a job. I think too many people see an earning potential and get into driving with little understanding of the mental, physical and emotional demands it puts on you. It can be a lucrative and rewarding career but that has much more to do with the individual than it doe the "job"
moneyburner, duurmandy, Bigdubber and 1 other person Thank this. -
and therein lies the problem. I feel your pain. I think the issue comes from living your life to someone elses standards. I did the same thing sort of. did some driving but than gave in, went to school and got an office job. some day I'll make it back to driving, it was definitely more enjoyable than sitting at a desk.duurmandy Thanks this.

Pharm sales is such a sleazy/manipulative business I honestly think should be illegal. That and advertising of certain types of drugs has done a huge disservice to the people writing prescriptions. You nailed it though, corporations are the pace setters.
Edit: I should clarify that I haven't had to deal with sales reps for nearly ten years now(company policy change), so the profession could be completely different now. I sort of doubt it though.
