If you call some independent schools their recruiters will be happy to tell you if you can get a grant. If you can he will happily to help you get it. Also you may have to try a few different places. I could have got a grant if I lived in the next county. Also there are loans through the employment office (low interest) anyone can qualify. you dont start paying back for a month after school.

 

And a month out of school, or even on the road, you will be trying very hard just to feed yourself.

I met a crazy driver one time that would go in a grocery store pushing a buggy up and down the aisles filling it with stuff & at the same time eating food. After he was full and not hungry anymore, he went through the checkout line, then said he left his wallet in the car. He would then leave the grocery store and vanish. Seems like a lot of trouble to steal a free meal. If you're a driver long enough you will meet some real characters on the road.

 

I got my training at Roehl and it has been a pretty good place to work. I've been here almost 3 years, and am just now looking at another company for more pay.

Roehl doesn't charge anything up front for their training. They just make you sign an agreement that you stay with them until you have driven 110,000 miles (I think that's how many miles it is). After you reach that point, the school is paid for. If you leave before that, they will charge you.

They do charge for the hotel room while you are at training, and if I remember correctly, it was a discounted rate of about $20/night.

There may be a couple of other small charges, but not much. I would give their recruiter a call and check them out. They are a good place to start in the trucking business.

 

I looked at them , but it was something like 800 bucks up front , idk maybe I read the info they sent me wrong .

Many of the fuel stops have some pretty good rewards programs that can help drivers with free showers and/or food. If you're using four different types of fuel stops, make sure you have a rewards card for each one BUT KNOW that most of them have various limitations on how long the points/freebies last for. I personally try to plan my fuel purchases at either Pilot/Flying-J or TA stops, and that helps rack-up more points/etc.

I would suggest central refrigerated. Technically you'll be working for swift. But it isn't all too bad. Not sure how swifts training works. But with central (if they kept it the same) was you pay nothing up front. Just need 60 for your license. And you pay for your food. Central will pay for your hotel and bus ticket. Then the day you get seated on your trainers truck is when you start getting paid. The agreement with central is that the school cost 3500. Every week they take out 57 from your paycheck. Then they put back half of that. So if you stay with them the whole year you only pay 1750. If you leave early. You owe the remaining amount in whole. Now like I said. We got bought out by swift. So I'm not sure how much has changed as far as training goes. As far as pay. We do go by swifts pay scale. Which is on their site. Don't go by the one on centrals. But there are some dedicated fleets you can get on that make around .35-.38 per mile.
