Tarp Rebar...? Why

Quite often its simply because the shipper or receiver wants it that way. Right or wrong they are paying for it so its their right. You just have to be sure the additional time spent is reflected in the rate.

 

Is it just bundles of flat rebar or is it formed into something already?

 

I hauled a few loads of guard rail for a new 4 lane highway and it had to be tarped. When I arrived at the delivery point they had no way to unload so they took that machine that drives the guard rail beams into the ground and adjusted it to push the load off the trailer into a big mud hole. Even the boxes of nuts & bolts were knocked off that way and into the mud hole.

Hauled some huge water pipes that had to be tarped because I was told the stack gas from the truck would be blown through the pipes and the water would taste like diesel for months.

 

Beats the hell outta me..I ALWAYS call customer and ask if they want it tarped if on a brokered load..Sometimes they say no/broker says yes.Who do you think wins that and yet recently:

I called a customer if he really wanted a load of shingles tarped loaded in Shakopee,MN going to Minot,ND and they said 'Yup'.OK. Tarped the shingles,took the load to Minot,ND and the forklift dumped em more/less in a snowbank. I asked em why did I tarp it and his reply was 'I dunno man,Beats the hell out of me'.. Things which make ya go "Huh"??

 

Some people don't like road salt on their stuff. Salt on the rebar may effect the concrete.

 

I hauled rebar that was painted or powdercoated or something and this is why I had to tarp it.

Even worse though, one time I hauled a load of lumber that turned out to be for pallets. Shipper said tarp it, receiver laughed at me.

 

One of the reasons for tarping re-bar is that the salt/calcium chloride solutions for snow/ice removal will adhere to the steel, when concrete is poured around it in the forms, the moisture in the wet concrete will re-activate the residual salt/chloride, and then the re-bar will start to rust, this significantly reduces the strength of the structure....IE; bridges fall down

 

Tarping rebar? What a piece of cake. Should take about 20 minutes.
