Since it appears we drivers are completely left out of the loop and detention
will probably never occur via gubberment intervention I have devised a plan .
( Anne what's her face is turning out to be just another tool )
Instead of continually being stepped on , used and forgotten we already have the tools to make it happen.( E logs )
Heres the idea : ( btw , the idea probably applies to food haulers more than the dry van people)
When sitting at shippers , receivers , gas pumps , etc ..... Simply stay " On Duty "
Force the issue , use up the clock .
Companies , after a few weeks time will be be floored to see the majority of their vehicles are
too low on hours to run or worse yet get hooked to a run they can't complete .
Where did all the hours disappear to they will ponder
Why have our numbers dropped so abruptly.
Oh my ! , we better look into this , they will say .
Then when they discover drivers in mass numbers staying " on duty " ( which is perfectly legal , and should be used anytime you are anywhere but in the sleeper or away from the truck , they will soon see that if they began paying hourly detention this problem would be corrected.)
Pay us to go into the sleeper , and in turn save themselves valuable log hours .
This idea applies especially to reefer drivers and the insane waits we have to suffer for no pay .
My average load burns about 4 -5 hours at each end of the trip. ( avg. trip +\- 1650 mi)
and lately several trips back and forth to the scale to get the axle weights corrected with no compensation
of any kind.
As far as wasting the time , it's not an issue . I've never been able to make up for lost time regardless of how it occurs,
at best you just end up working harder for less .
Force them to react ...create the driver shortage these companies have been mythologizing for years .
PS : several driver where I work have already begun doing this , I saw it and stole the idea.
Road Dog visionaries no less , sent to lead us out of bondage

Oops, I stumbled in here thinking this was Detention Myth..........................
-
I have been doing this for years and I wish everyone would do the same. The old days of two log books and multiple licenses are over. "We'll get it there no matter what it takes" makes for a cool movie but those days are long gone.
My company wonders why I log 30 minutes for a pretrip instead of 15. I became aware of a court case where the driver had seriously injured someone, he had been logging 15 minute pretrips for years but when the court brought a rig into the parking lot, he could not recreate the full inspection in less than 32 minutes. One he was shown to have falsified his logbook repeatedly, he was not able to stay out of prison. Yes, he went to prison.
The vast majority of drivers are lying and falsifying their logbooks in order to get the job done. This behavior benefits others (shippers, carriers, brokers) and has been a detriment to us as a group. Why do you think many shippers and consignees take 1 hour and 59 to load or unload you? Because they get two hours of your time for free, that's why. Have your dispatcher work the first and last two hour segments of his shift for free and see how long that lasts.
Join OOIDA, join a political action committee, call your congressman. Most importantly document what is really happening. People will listen if you have facts. They will ignore irate drivers cussing at them on the phone.
One last thing: please visit truckersagainsttrafficking.com and read the information there. This is a vulgar, disgusting practice that is happening right in front of our eyes. It must be stopped. -
Really? If the drivers were going to do this... (as I had been saying for years).. they would have done this BEFORE all the victim mentality started.. Drivers crapped their own nest and all the good companies that paid anything are gone! Too late to complain about a situation that the super truckers created and allowed to flourish! Truckers as a whole have the same mentality of a lot of abused partners do.. they get abused and beaten.. but will defend the abused to the hilt against DA MAN! ...
wsyrob and Toomanybikes Thank this. -
My company already does this. After 2 hours we start charging the place for detention. If I'm stopped for any reason I leave it on duty. I'm also paid hourly Otr tanker yanker.
-
Ok i,m going to bring this up as acreefer guy most reefer loads pay a premium to justify time spent in fact i pay my driver for detention washouts etc because really it,s in my rates .....now if your carriers not compensating you in a manner that you consider fair thats on you find a new one but cutting your productivity will only make my rates go up so have at it
RedForeman Thanks this. -
It's not cutting productivity. Drivers should be paid for everything on line 3 AND 4. Most companies only pay for driving. Why? Is that all we do?
Mev, sevenmph and truckerdave1970 Thank this. -
So deal with your company at the end of the day if your making 65 or 70 k does it matter how it,s broken down wether they pay you 5 $ to fuel the truck or not
-
What Otr company pays their drivers 65k? I have yet to see one that wants to pay over $1000 a week.
-
My goal with drivers i have hired is to maintain a 1200 a week min your setting your sights too low
Big_D409 Thanks this.
