Gee, sorry I was not aware that you were taking attendance.
I was busy at the "Vast Right Wing Corporate Conspiracy Convention" in Reno. -
Sure that wasn't the far right wing Neocon convention aka Builderburg or CFR?
-
CFR around here stands for College Finals Rodeo.

To 2xR: Why be so worried about being so heavily invested in American oil companies? They basically want their cake and to be able to eat it too. Those of you who expect our government to do something about high fuel prices are barking up the wrong tree. The beef is with the oil companies, not the government. It's very simple, cut the demand and the prices will go down. Slow those trucks down, increase fuel mileage, and everyone do your part to reduce demand. And as far as South American oil companies go, who cares if they hate us or not. America is pretty much hated through out the globe anyway. WAKE UP PEOPLE!
-
If we cut the demand, they will just cut the output so that they can still keep it high. They could take from Alaska, but the Gov has ordered them to be capped. Why? Because it keeps the Supply down.
-
Any demand reduction in North America will gladly be absorbed by other countries.
If you want to cry to the government, the ONLY thing they control is the tax on fuel.(24.4 cents per gallon)
That and the extra cost in producing Ultra Low Sulfur content mandate from the EPA. (5-25 cents per gallon) -
Tit for Tat get's nowhere in a meaningful discussion.
America is full of people with different opinions and ideas! You can sit here lobbing tomatoes at each other over silly points that hold no value to the concerns of the U.S. Truckers plight, or you can agree to disagree then move on to common ground in supporting U.S. Truckers.
Holy crap! Truckers had better unite and direct their individual talents and knowledge to their cause NOW or the day may come when you meekly submit to government laws, rules and regulations that will deny you the opportunity to fight back!
Look at history and government regulation, if you don't convince them TODAY that you are a force to be reckoned with - you will be in deep #### tomorrow! -
Actually the taxes are, on average, more than twice your figure. In January of this year the average US tax on diesel fuel was 53.6 cents per gallon, with a high of 72 cents per gallon in California and a low of 32.4 in Alaska (source: http://www.api.org/statistics/fueltaxes/upload/DIESEL_TAX_MAP_JANUARY_2008.pdf)
As for the additional cost of producing ULSD, this is an example of big government mandating something without regard to the consequences of said mandate. What's next -- zero sulfur diesel at $25 per gallon? The EPA estimated the cost of producing ULSD to add about 5 cents per gallon to the price of diesel (source: http://www.natso.com/Content/Naviga...Diesel/Frequently_Asked_Questions/default.htm). This mandate also required that 80% of all diesel sold by June 1, 2006, be ULSD. If increased production costs for ULSD are to blame for the current pump price, why was that increase so long in coming? Even if we assume that the cost of producing ULSD adds 10 cents per gallon, this doesn't justify an increase at the pump of over two dollars per gallon in less than two years. Increased world demand? Certainly there has been an increase. But again, that increase in demand does not correspond to the increase of prices over the past two-to-three years. Further, demand increase is neither a given nor a constant. Demand rises and falls throughout the year(s) for a multitude of reasons -- price being one of them. But supply is constantly manipulated to maintain the most favorable pricing for the producers, with little (if any) concern for the impact on the market or the world economies.
In any event, the elimination of excise taxes and a return to low-sulfur diesel should drop the price of fuel by a minimum of 50 cents per gallon -- prosecuting the oil industry for war profiteering and price gouging would cut that price even more. -
My figures represented Federal tax only, good luck getting any State to lower their tax.
There will be no return to low sulfur diesel fuel, so forget that idea.
The rest of the world is using more and more diesel powered autos, not to mention the growing economies of the Far East.
