He ran steel driving someone else's truck for years. The last guy he drove for paid 30% of what the load paid to the truck. His checks always averaged $1000. It sounds like he won't make much more owning his own & will incur even more debt with cost of repair & maintenance, hauling containers that is. I vote steel but he won't listen to me. He knows the loads, knows the dispatchers, knows the pay, he knows everything with steel. With this container company, I feel like we are jumping in with feet first, knowing absolutely nothing.

I never hauled steel. I doubt it's a local job. He could end up over state lines and LEO's love to get older trucks. Containers mostly nearby instate away from scales. I haul containers, It's mostly long term effects (besides tires) you got to know what to haul and where. It depends on maintenance and upkeep.bullhaulerswife Thanks this.

he's rolling the dice,no matter how good is the pay you dont have cash in hand in case anything happen.my advice is to do containers at least he wont drive far from home and if anything happens it will be easy to repower the load.is the steel hauling job is local(200 miles radius)?

Yes the steel is local, the furthest he went was La Verne (spelling?) TN. And we live 15 miles from where he loads.

DOT love the container guys around here. They set up on the access roads to their facility. They get a double whammy there, the hoppers and the containers on that road. LOL

Out of Ohio there are many options apart from containers depending on where you are. I know lots of loads of trash come out from Long Island on either flatbeds or walking floors and go out to west PA/Ohio. Then there are loads of steel that come out of Ohio and Indiana that you can haul. If you don't mind sleeping in the truck and working Monday to Friday, as well as keeping that door closed and hammer down, then you can make good money with steel. That's what I did out of Jersey.

Yeah they did that for 4 months last summer in Mn. Was getting old but all he cared about was weight and if people slid the sliders or not. Easy tickets. I drove by them 6+ times a day during that and never inspected. Just don't haul around junk.bullhaulerswife Thanks this.
