I found this site about a week ago when searching for information on getting my CDL and becoming a trucker. So far it has been pretty useful for gleaning info about what to expect when I get started down this path.

About me: I'm 33; for the last 7 years I've (bear with me now) dispatched ambulances for a private service. I decided that it wasn't getting me anywhere and I've always longed for the open road. So, I'm saving up my money for the next several months so I can get my CDL over the summer. I'll be going part-time at the ambulance service until I'm certain that I'm not going to be one of those people who get sent home from school because they can't back a trailer ;-)

Anyways, thanks for reading, and I hope I see some of you out there on the road!

Put your location on your profile; city/state. Welcome to trucking.

Didn't know it had options for that, as I've been viewing the forum with the Tapatalk app. The More You Know (tm)

Marietta, GA - good location for Millis Transfer. They have their own CDL school and the drivers average $50K per year.

Georgia has some good cheap community college CDL schools and also the Hope Grant which pays for CDL school with lottery proceeds. With Millis Transfer you only need $500.00 to get started.

See, you may be closer to your new career than you think!

Funny you mention that - I actually put in an application there earlier this week and I'm waiting on them to verify my employment :-D. Millis is at the top of my list. If that falls through, I hadn't even considered the community schools. Thanks for your help! This is why I decided to become part of this forum!

Sounds like I'm in the same boat as you! I work as a 911 operator, only I'm in New Mexico right now. Will be headed to Douglasville where I'm from originally and also planning to apply with Millis Transfer for MTI. They said I can't apply until I'm an official resident of GA though, so I'm about a month behind schedule... Good luck, and keep us posted

Cool. I'll be in the June 9th class in Cartersville at Millis. I'm pretty excited and a touch nervous at the same time. What if I am one of those people that just "doesn't get it?"

Only time will tell. I do well enough (in terms of job performance) at the ambulance service to know that I adapt pretty quickly. Here's hoping!

Also, crc, let me know what class you'll be getting and how you are doing, as well.

I'm hoping by the time I get out there and get my GA license, I won't have to wait too long for an open class. The recruiter said they fill quick. I would think only the people who don't really want to do it are the ones who never get it. I think as long as you pay attention in the class you'll be fine. From what I've read on the forum, they've got some good instructors.
